Lowrance 522-ice fishing

walleyemaniac

Question

Can anyone tell me where my setings should be to use my 522 for ice fishing. First year I'll be using it out of the boat. Found some old posts but coundn't find any setting parameters. (ping speed, color line, graph speed...) Also they were talking about the 332's having an "ice" setting to conserve battery life does the 522 have this and I just haven't found it yet. Just started playing around with it more and any help would be appreciated.

WM, I don't know if this info is correct or not, but it works for me. The first thing is to go onto the sonar menu and take the unit off of auto sensitivity and auto depth range. I don't know how much of a difference that makes to you but it really bugs me when it bounces up and down when you are close to another depth range. I adjust the sensitivity accordingly to what size jig or lure that I am using. I also turn the chart speed to as fast as it will go so you can see whats going on with your jig as close to real time as you can. Another thing that I do is when I am no longer using the gps, I go to the status section under pages, hit menu and select use indoors. That makes a difference on your battery life when the unit isn't constantly looking for a gps signal through the fishhouse and beeping all of the time. I don't really know about the ping speed but mine is set at 75%. The best thing to do is get on the lake a little early and mess around with it and see what works best for you. It helps a little with the boredom if the fish arent being too cooperative. Hope the info helps.

Ping speed high

Noise rejection high

manual sensitivity

manual depth range

The 332c does not have an ice mode. I believe the 522 does. As far as I know the ice mode just gives you a battery gauge (which isn't perfectly acurate anyway) and maybe cuts down battery usuage.

Also I would recomend running the normal sonar screen in split screen with zoom on one side, 2x or 4x. Most lowrance units offer a flasher screen (vexlar type of circular screen) but I don't see the benefit over the normal screen.

Side note - it's possible that when people say "ice mode" they mean the flasher screen, but there is actually an ice mode setting on some units (hope that makes sense).

There is also a "real time" display that puts a vertical column of the signals coming back on the right side of the display. So you get both a graph and a flasher effect on the same screen.

Hey guys. I use my 522 on the ice as well and it's been great. The only issue I have is when I fish next to other flashers I have a hard time picking up my 16th oz. jig. I've toyed with noise rejection but it seems to not only take away the signal clutter, but also any presence of a jig. I just updated to 2.50.

My settings are with 100% ping speed, 100% sensitivity with noise rejection high.
