Tip up fishing

Does running to your tip up on clear ice cause a fish to spit the hook and run or not? Wouldn't they see your "shadow" and get spooked. Mainly northerns or walleyes. Never really had it happen but wondering what everyone else has noticed. Is it better to creep to it or knock people over to get to it faster. We always play first come first served. Minnesota rules.

Well, last year a lot of the time when I ran up to the tip up, the fish would run. It wouldn't spit the hook, but it wouldn't just sit two feet under the hole either. I guess they can hear/feel me walking around on the ice from my experience.

I run, but depends on how far away I have it set.

There was a video on here about guys that would fire up their trucks and drive around to get the fish going when the bite was slow

i always creep up to the tip up,in my experiance the fish get spooked not cause they can see you but the noise of you running on the ice directly above the fish.

hey blaine, i used to do that up on mille lacs in the perm when the fishing was slow it usually seemed to work, not always though of course. lol

blaine, ive done that to, i call it the texas round up only do it when the fishing is slow...no experience to it working!

The chinese fire drill has worked from time to time as well. LOL If it doesn't get the fish to bite atleast the look on the other people's face when you get up and fly out of the house without warning is pretty much worth it also. Even better when they run out after you wondering what the h%&l is going on. priceless

me and my buddies tend to run and push/shove on the way to the hole and we seems to still get most of our fish even on clear ice

We were doing the MN rules for tip-ups, but when the younger guys like myself kept getting to the tip-ups faster the rules had to change. Now we label the tip-ups and only go to the ones that are yours. It has gotten pretty competitive about who has the best set-up and everyone tries to out rig each other. With this cold weather, I can't wait to get the tip-ups out. I think that is my favorite part of ice fishing.
