Rocks in west central Minnesota

Recommended Posts

There are all sorts of cool rocks to find in your area. The counties you mention are in the outwash of post ice age lake Aggaziz, and the bed of the glacial river Warren. Think of it this way, 12,000 years ago the entire area was under ice and water at various times in the flowing drainage of the last glacier. The rocks and gravel came from points north and contain agates, and lots of other interesting minerals. You are also in an area that was home to ice age animals and you could find fossils from them.

Have fun looking around!

(OR) You'd have to wonder what effect the flood had on the planet a few thousand years ago. A good explanation for the fossils...

I've done some snooping around for agates in the Fergus Falls area...purdy slim pickins SW of I94 anyway. I did find some quartz worth tumbling but no agates. I have heard some fancy bones have been picked up in the Red River Valley tho.

i once found a shed elk antler in creek bank mud that had eroded away south of Olivia, MN. i have no idea how old it was but was in rough shape. my brothers and i did find buffalo bones in the minnesota river when it got low in the summer, never a skull though.
