2005 toyota truck

Recommended Posts

That was a problem with the IS 250 (i think the 04/05 models). Since there are similar drive by wire systems in all the newer Toyota's, Toyota decided to check them all to see if there could be a problem. Hmmmmm, imagine that, a car company that is trying to find a problem before there is a problem!

The love is back gentleman!

Ya go figure, trying to find out a problem before there are a million cars on the road with it...cough cough GM cough cough... whistlegrin (I still drive a chevy and fix it so I get to make fun)

Anyway, they are pretty solid. The only common complaint I ever heard about them was fuzzy (corroded) battery terminals. Pretty small problem and a easy fix IMO.

As mentioned above, I think Toyota makes good vehicles overall, but we need to be objective to the question asked as well.

I heard something about frame rusting but can't find anything to back that up.

The 05' Tacoma is affected along with several other models in the inadvertent acceleration issue. Toyota has been fighting this hand and foot, including having to retract a statement in the last week that the problem has been corrected. If you believe the "floormat" excuse then I have some ocean front property in Nevada to sell you.

"Recall Date

OCT 05, 2009

Model Affected

2005 TOYOTA TACOMA

Description

TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2010 PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL CAN GET STUCK IN THE WIDE OPEN POSITION DUE TO ITS BEING TRAPPED BY AN UNSECURED OR INCOMPATIBLE DRIVER'S FLOOR MAT.

Consequence

A STUCK OPEN ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAY RESULT IN VERY HIGH VEHICLE SPEEDS AND MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO STOP THE VEHICLE, WHICH COULD CAUSE A CRASH, SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.

Remedy

TOYOTA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS OF AFFECTED VEHICLES TO REMOVE ANY DRIVER'S FLOOR MAT AND NOT REPLACE IT WITH ANY OTHER FLOOR MAT PENDING THE DEVELOPMENT OF MODEL-SPECIFIC REMEDIES. TOYOTA WILL MAIL A SECOND NOTIFICATION TO OWNERS OF AFFECTED VEHICLES NOTIFYING THEM OF THE FREE REMEDIES WHEN THEY ARE AVAILABLE. THE FIRST NOTICE WAS MAILED ON OCTOBER 30, 2009 AND TOYOTA WILL ADVISE NHTSA OF THE ESTIMATED DATE WHEN THE REMEDIES WILL BE AVAILABLE. "Toyota Recalls Floor Mats in Camry, Avalon, Prius, Tacoma, Tundra Models

Mats can slip forward and cause runaway acceleration

By James Limbach

ConsumerAffairs.com

September 30, 2009

Toyota is recalling 3.8 million Lexus and Toyota cars because the floor mats can slide onto the accelerator, potentially causing uncontrolled acceleration. Owners of the affected models are being asked to remove the floor mats until they can be replaced with a safer version.

Toyota and Lexus vehicles affected are:

• 2007-2010 Camry

• 2005-2010 Avalon

• 2004-2009 Prius

• 2005-2010 Tacoma

• 2007-2010 Tundra

• 2007-2010 ES 350

• 2006-2010 IS 250 and IS350

Although the problem has been around for years in several Toyota models, the company and federal safety officials are suddenly taking it seriously.

"A stuck open accelerator pedal may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop the vehicle, which could cause a crash, serious injury or death," said Toyota. "This is an urgent matter," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. "For everyone's sake, we strongly urge owners of these vehicles to remove mats or other obstacles that could lead to unintended acceleration."

Toyota recalled 55,000 Camry and Lexus models in September 2007 following complaints of runaway acceleration. Owners of the popular Prius Hybrid had also complained of the problem but were not included in that recall, though Prius models are included in the current recall.

Toyota said earlier that a fatal crash involving a Lexus ES350 in San Diego had been preliminarily blamed on an all-weather floor mat interfering with the accelerator pedal. 20070-2008 ES350 models were included in the 2007 recall.

I don't remember what years where effected but there was a deal with the frame and I'm almost positive that campaign was last summer.

As far as that floor mat deal, I don't doubt it! You should see how wedged up some of those floor mats are allowed to get! I should start talking pictures and post a few!! You wouldn't believe how many manual transmissions get towed in for no cranks any to have the floor mat removed from behind the clutch pedal. By the time you pay diag and tow your looking at a coupe hundred bucks to have somebody put your floor mat back in the right place. grin

The older Tundra's, besides the expected maintenance usually come in for an upstream O2 sensor at about 150k.

Toyota also just had a huge ball joint recall campaign on the Tundras as well. If the previous owner was the original or the vehicle was ever serviced at the dealer than it was probably resolved already. I have yet to see a loose ball joint on a Tundra or Tacoma but it does happen occasional. (by the way about a gabillion of those where replaced and paid for by Toyota whether they where bad or not, yup a little more friendly ribbing! Mine had 13k on it when they where replaced).

I heard something about frame rusting but can't find anything to back that up.

That frame deal wasnt even a recall it was an example of the commitment to their customers. It covered trucks from 1995 to 2000. At it was a very small number of trucks that were even reported.

Toyota received reports that on a small number of Tacoma frames may develop corrosion that goes beyond the normal surface rust that’s commonly found on metal after years of exposure.

All Toyota did was extend the rust-perforation warranty covering these trucks for a period of 15 years from each vehicle’s original date of purchase, with no mileage limitation. If the truck met the criteria Toyota gave you 150% value of truck.

It is proof about Toyota that nobody stands behind their product like they do. The big 3 would have been out of business years ago it they offered this type of commitment.

I now a few people who have Toyota trucks and like them. My cousin owns one and I talked to him the other day. He said he is very happy just wish the mpg was as good as Ford or GM. I told him it's a truck smile. Now if they could only make a truck that looks as good as it runs.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
