Musky Buck
That's why I said it wasn't a golden rule just a logical theory to why many do it. I do hear ya Dave on the marginal public lands, the deal is most of the baiting is done on private stealing even more deer away from you Dave. The food plots steal much less figuring deer will travel from great distances to a food plot, been watching that for years at my neighbors, his food plot deer cross 6-8 different properties yearly to get there, when the other neighbor started to bait the deer rarely left that property as they were relying on a person to feed them. They in a sense were choosing the bait over the most lush plot you could ever see. Why, the plot is open country, far from good bedding ground, the bait was yards from their main bedding area. If you had a tough year like me, saw 8 deer, 2 tiny bucks, my thoughts aren't well next year heck with it, I'm dumping a load of corn for em, heck no, I'll hope like this year maybe a hot doe will bring 1 by. Or why complain, I could bow hunt, scout more for rifle and muzzleload, just put more time in. Dave, how's the muzzleloader crowd where you are at ? Give it a go, can't be too thick like rifle hunters, to me it sounds like your area is just simply overcrowded with hunters like mine.
Bear55
Here is something to think about, what if it were legal to bait? It wouldn't take the deer more than a few years to learn to only visit bait piles at night. Then everyone for baiting would have to dream up some other way to avoid scouting and hunting for their deer. Hey maybe we could use night vision or spotlights, that way we can get a clean ethical shot at a deer blinded by a 10 million candle power spotlight. Harmonica Bear
It wouldn't surprise me a bit for someeone baiting to spotlight a baitpile if a big old buck was there. If you do one, I'd guess that's a next step.
