Well after looking at the State record for this fish, I guess I should have measured it. I have a feeling it was pretty darn close to the current record of 3-15

Thats a very nice fish! Was it foul hooked or did it eat?

I can't say for certain that it ate the bait. The hook was in the mouth, but hooked from the outside in, so it's hard for me to say.

The only reason I would say that it ate it, is because we caught another smaller one right after that and it was hooked well.

nice fish! i've seen them swimming around the cannon river, but they are extremely spooky fish.....i'd say they are more spooky than trout

Come to think of it my buddy had caught one of these just about the same size right by the Jordan Bridge. I couldn't figure out what it was other than a carp of some sort. Now I know thank you for clarifying!!

Are they more numerous than quillback? What is the difference between the 2? They look very similar.

The Quillback will usually have a longer quill on its dorsal compared to the River Carpsucker. Also the River Carpsucker will have a nipple like bump in the "v" of its lower lip. The Quills no not have this bump whatsoever. There is a third around here called the Highfin Carpsucker, this one has the lip bump as well, but is usually more wide bodied with a very long quill off its dorsal. The Highfin is the smallest of the carpsuckers.

Here are my best examples of the three species here in MN. I believe these are ID'ed right, feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

I dont' have the lip ID pics yet. I'm sure someone else here might have them....
