I can't say for certain that it ate the bait. The hook was in the mouth, but hooked from the outside in, so it's hard for me to say.

The only reason I would say that it ate it, is because we caught another smaller one right after that and it was hooked well.

The Quillback will usually have a longer quill on its dorsal compared to the River Carpsucker. Also the River Carpsucker will have a nipple like bump in the "v" of its lower lip. The Quills no not have this bump whatsoever. There is a third around here called the Highfin Carpsucker, this one has the lip bump as well, but is usually more wide bodied with a very long quill off its dorsal. The Highfin is the smallest of the carpsuckers.

Here are my best examples of the three species here in MN. I believe these are ID'ed right, feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

I dont' have the lip ID pics yet. I'm sure someone else here might have them....
