Do deer get scared from Smoking in Stand?

Recommended Posts

My dad is a smoker and an avid outdoorsman. He smokes in the stand and has shot numerous bucks over the years. I will never admit it to him, but I dont think that him smoking affects the hunting at all. I know cigarettes are a man made manufactured product, but smoke is a natural scent. I dont think it can be used to mask scent or attract deer, but i really dont think that it causes deer alarm.

my brother in law was bowhunting with a guy last night who just finished his smoke and then shot a 10 pointer.

Oh yeah.... well my cousin's best friend's, sister's boyfriend knows a guy that knows another guy that has a cousin who's brothers best-friend's girlfriend's uncle has a best friend who knows of a guy who's aunt shared a smoke with a turdy point buck before she cut it's throat. winkgrin

Is it time to get on the road yet......... cry

I hear about all these deer shot while smoking but can any confirm the deer actually smelled the smoke before they were shot ? I hunt mature bucks only, I could see yearlings and fawns some of which may have yet to figure out what hunting is and by the sheer numbers of hunters of course some deer/bucks will make the mistake because of the rut, pressure, etc. I think it would be best asked of smoking bowhunters how many come into range, with a rifle some are shot long before they wind ya. Another ? is how many have enclosed box stands or how many more deer would you see if you weren't smoking. But, on the other side of the fence I don't think it has much of an impact but if it affects that 1 giant buck someday........and he snorts ya and he's gone, what a bummer. Either way, the woods will reek of human odor in a few days.

I never smoked in the deerstand, but I bet I still had the smell on me by the time I got to the stand.

I quit smoking this summer and since I have my lungs feel great, my blood pressure has gone down, and while sitting on the bowstand I haven't seen anymore deer than I have in the past... smile

A fellow I know sits in his stand a smokes cigars all day. He always will see more deer then his hunting party. One day a guy he hunts with got so upset that he hadn't been seeing any deer that he took cigar ashes and butts out of the ashtray and threw them in his jacket pockets and hood. He went out to his stand and shot a huge 10pt buck later that evening. I wouldn't do it but ever since then he smokes cigars on stand too. Thought it was funny as heck.

I always kind of thought it depended on where they are. If there is civilization near by they will be some what used to all of the different smells that us humans can make. I used to smoke in the stand and can't say for sure if the deer cared or not. We were about a quarter of a mile off a busy highway and every now and again I would get a wiff of smoke from some one that had gone by on the highway. A deer that lives in the middle of a forest may not have ever smelled cigarette smoke may spook and/or may be curious I don't know which... I do what I can to play the wind and leave the rest up to the good Lord. If the Gods of hunting smile and send a deer my way then I have a great day! Take care and N Joy the Hunt././Jimbo
