Rem 770 in 30-06??????

Recommended Posts

Looking at picking one of these rifles up for my nephew you to shoot for deer. Anyone have any experience with this weapon? Likes/dislikes? Gander has it for under 400, so I thought it might be a good inexpensive rifle for him to shoot. Thanks for any opinions/information.

They are a very nice rifle. The only drawback is the bolt runs a little rough when you lock it down, not on the slide, and the safty is a little loud. I dont think there are any riffles with a real quit safty, and a little rem oil would prolly cure the bolt problem. Other then that its a nice riffle and remingtons usually last forever. Thats really the only good good gun deal ive been seeing at gander. I think the Marlin XL7 is a decent bolt gun in the 30-06 caliber and only runs about 330. Marlins usually run smooth but u would need to buy a scope for it, i dont know if u can get them with open sights or not. There are couple other good inexpensive models out there such as the mossberg atr, & others but i just dont know much about them. If you have time to shop around id do so, if not id prolly side with the Marlin with a decent scope.

I purchased a 770 in a 243 last year for my son. Nice gun but if I had to do it over again I would purchase a Savage. I have some upper end Remington's which are very good, this is their bottom rifle and the bolt is really poor after shooting many rounds and trying different lubrications. A gun smith told me that with this rifle the bolt is poor.

My biggest hang up with a riffle is the bolt. Have not used my 770 in enough hunting situations to be bothered by it yet but it definatlly is not the best bolt in there line up. I also own several high end remingtons that perform flawlessly. Savage makes many nice guns in the mid price range but id suggest checking out that Marlin XL7, I know i sound like there spokesmen but for the money it seems to be a great gun. The bolt is very smooth and is just a basic hunting weapon. I started out hunting with expensive Springfield, Savage, and Remington rifles and have found that i may have overbought. I now side with cheaper synthetic or camo riffles in a 270 0r 30-06 cal, because there are many cheaper, but highly effective weapons avilable. When it comes to guns your dollers are well spent, but if You can get the job done with basic equipment all the better

I was looking at the Savage Stevens 200XP setup as well. Doesn't seem to bad for 450 bucks, also the Savage 11XCFP looks like a nice little package as well. He wants a Winchester Model 70, but they are a little steep in price for me right now.

I've sold all of the guns mentioned in the past. I highly recommend the Marlin XL7. It is inexpensive, the bolt seems quite smooth, and my own experience with Marlin bolt actions has been nothing but positive. The remington 770's are an accurate rifle, and I'm sure would definately get the job done for many years, but we did have some customers quite disatisfied with them. The bolts are a little sloppy, and there was a really bad problem with the clips when empty, catching the bolt not allowing it to close. This occured on over 10 rifles straight out of the box. A very minor problem, but indeed, a problem. The savage model is also a very nice bolt for the price.

I don't think you can really go wrong with any of them, but if it were my money, I would buy the Marlin in a heartbeat.

RUN AWAY.. sorry but the 770 is junk just like the 710. I am surprised remington even puts their name on this gun. There are many other choices in the same price range. the Marlin xl7 comes to mind ($289). So does Weatherby, savage, stevens.. the 770 in nothing more than a redesigned 710 which was so problematic they had to change the model to escape the bad press. the 770 isn't much better. Ask anyone who knows rifles, they will say the same thing.

I have a 710 in .270 is it the best? no way. Does it do the job, yes. Bolt is not the smoothest, its ugly as a mud fence, but it does shoot and it is very accurate. I have had it about 5 or 6 years and it has not failed me once.

I shoot a Rem model 700 in .30-06, an excellent gun, but not inexpensive. I don't know how big or old the original poster's nephew is, but I would HIGHLY recommend the Marlin XL7, especially, either in .30-06 or .270. I shot one that one of my buddies owns many times this fall, and it is a great gun, IMO. The trigger is actually better than the one on my Remington in that it is set to a much much lighter pull, but is still very safe. It is a real bargain, unbelievably inexpensive.
