The 22-250 is a very capable round with modern bullet design. I've never used one on deer, but after my experience with fox and yotes I think its a good round. If my family's eating supper was on the line and you put a slug gun, Bow, 30-30, muzzle loader, and a good 22-250 with a nice scope I would choose the 22-250. Look at how many militaries use the .223 for its good qualities at taking down man sized targes. That being said I'll stick to my .270 and don't really see why the law needed to be changed.

I for one, just cant believe that a 60 grain bullet or whatever weight bullet you would shoot through a 22-250 would retain enuf energy and not fragment apart after hitting the solid shoulder muscle and bone of a big game animal such as whitetail. There is a huge difference in even the thickness of a the skin on a deer versus a fox or yote. The shockwaves that a larger bore bullet creates through a carcass of a deer in even a not so well placed shot I think would still create more damage to the vital organs of a deer, than the pencil eraser bullet of a 22-250. I've boned out a few deer now that still had the bullets from .22 caliber guns in them. Weather or not it was a .22 long rifle or a 22-250, I will never know, all I do know though is that it was not enuf to kill em. Like I previously stated had it been a large bore bullet, i would have blown rite threw the deer and kept goin out the otherside. I will stick with my caliber that was designed to take down these tough Minnesota whitetails and leave my yote rifle in the cabinet til after xmas.

I seem to remember a lengthy discussion about this last year, Lou Cornicelli from the DNR jumped in and gave the reasoning behind the rule changes. You can do a search about it using the search function.

Is the 22-250 capable of taking a deer? I think with the appropriate bullet it is. will a poorly shot deer from a 30-06 walk away? Yep. Would I use a 40 grain or even a 60 grain bullet to shoot a deer? No way, but I think a 75 grain bullet would do very nicely, especially at the FPS they come out of a 22-250 or even my 223 for that matter. My 243 shoots 55 gr. Vmax extremely well, but I would use the 85 gr. Barnes TSX for deer.

I have a 220 swift, and I normally shoot it with 55 gr bullets from time to time. I have a friend of mine that used to hunt deer in PA for years with the exact same rifle I have. I can tell you that I have never shot a deer, but a coyote drops dead in his tracks and I would not hesitate to use it on a deer. Velocity is King! Followed very closely by placement. Ask anyone with a bow and arrow right?????

I dont know what i said wrong, i guess its wrong to critize a 223 rifle. anyway i think a 22-250 is a suitible cartridge for coons, woodchucks rabbits, small fox, and even mature greys. Thats about it. thats just what i think.
