Putting floor drain in garage

Shorelunch

Recommended Posts

I have a corner of my garage by the garage door that seems to collect 80% of the water from my wife's SUV in the winter.

It's an insulated/sheetrocked garage without a floor drain. It's a big pain in the rear squeegying out the water, the window gets frozen over from the moisture, I don't want any damage, etc.

I'm interested in getting an aftermarket floor drain in the corner by the garage door. Has anyone had success doing this type of project? How did you set it up? Did you have grooves cut into the floor to channel the water?

Thanks!

Installing an area drain in a garage that already has concrete in it can be difficult. If you are going to run it out to the outside of the house, not too hard. Connecting it to the sanitary sewer in your house can be a lot more work. If you decide to do it, remember, no traps on the area drain. It will freeze and eventually break.

Would cutting up the area that collects water and refilling it with concrete so it's not a low spot work?

I'm envisioning a low spot in the corner that the water flows to. If you cut out that corner and fill it in with more concrete than was there before, pitching it towards the garage door, wouldn't that drain? Without seeing the floor, it's hard to say. Got any pics?

You still didn't mention if you are wanting to drain it to the outside or to the sanitary sewer in your house.

Thin patches work for a little while but i have never seen any last ,if you want a permanant fix saw the area and remove the old crete, put in a drain like you mentioned dig a pit sink a piece of 4 inch perferated pvc and put clean stone around it no fines such as gravel you want clean stone ,river rock or concrete stone or plumb it into youre system ,dig youre pit at least 2 feet deep leave the bottom of the pipe open right into the dirt that way you use a piece of rerod to poke the bottom out as over a couple a years a crust will form. it will work good enough for runoff off a vehicle but if you want to wash in there just increase the size of the pit.
