pool 2 help

Im thinkin about hitting pool 2 this weekend for the first time. Im a lil nervous to put the boat on the river, never been on it before. I'm not really sure where the boats ramps are or what areas are good for bass. What would be the best ramp to launch out of? What area's would be good for bass and what type of structure is on the river? If anyone could help me out that would be great. Just need a few pointers.

no i cant...i wrote on the forum a week or so ago that i couldnt fish it. I have to head out of the cities at around noon to go back to south dakota, sounds terrible. thought i would at least get out for a couple hours before i go. Sorry Cecil, it would have been a lot of fun

how is one suppose to get over this except by fishing it?

i too have never fished it so i am not much help just thought this line was kinda funny.

good luck

I guess my point was that if you have 1 time to fish 1 place before leaving town, I wouldn't pick pool 2. If you are willing to put in some time and want to start now, great, go for it!

I bass fish pool 2 quite often wink

If you want to stick to the east side, Lake Elmo can be decent in the fall... it may be a little early there still unless this cool weather sticks around.

We've caught several fish over 5 and 1 over 6 fishing the deep edges of the coontail beds on the south end and northwest corner. You won't catch a bunch of fish, but the few you get can be monsters.

Big Marine is fun too with an easy weedline bite.

If you really want to hit Pool 2, drop in an Lion's Levee in St Paul Park and hit any riprap south of there with a bright color crankbait or spinnerbait. You should hook up with some smallies doing this.

I was out on pool 2 with my dad on saturday and we managed to catch 30-40 bass in about 4 hrs. I fish pool 2 for bass probably more than anyone and I have never had a day like that in september before. We caught most of our fish in an area that I have never caught fish before. We just happened upon a huge school of fish busting shad and caught one after another. Most fish were in the 15-16 inch range but we caught quite a few over 17 and the biggest was an 18.5 in smallmouth. Awesome day on the river for sure!

Oly,

I've fished it for 20 years (but not that much recently) and can only remember one day like that back in the early '90s. Low water, dead calm, and in the main channel! We probably caught 60 off one little sand island outside of Sheely's (sp?). Largemouth and smallmouth!

Were all your fish largemouth?

I would say 3 out of 4 were smallies, and they were in about two ft of water in the middle of a very large backwater area quite a ways from the main channel, but not too far from some fairly deep water. I have lived within 5 miles of the river my whole life and have been fishing bass down there since I was a little kid and this is the first time I actually came across a school of bass feeding like that it was really cool.

The lake association kills the weeds every year for the skiers. That lake would have some good cabbage beds if they didnt poison it out.

I fish out there alot and the past two years the bassin hasnt been as good as it was years ago. Several years ago there were lots of big dead bass and panfish washing up on shore so their was a pretty significant winter kill (atleast for bass). The slop bite hasnt been very good the past two years with the low water...
