Huns

I was thinking of trying to get out and hunt some Huns before the land is full of pheasant hunters. I figured this could also serve as some scouting for roosters as well. I am thinking about going and hitting some southern MN WMA's near Worthington, Slayton, etc. I've bever really been down that way and wanted to check it out anyway. Anybody know if there are any birds down there?

Huns will be tough to find. The numbers just aren't what they used to be due to loss of habitat.

I have seen just a few flocks of huns in MN. All in WC or SW MN and everyone was in a small grain field. If you can find a wheat or barley field ... they may just be there.

Even when I lived out in CRP/WMA heaven in central North Dakota in the mid 90s, almost all of the early- mid-season Huns I found were in barley stubble fields. You don't even need a dog for those grainfed Huns . . just permission.

Tye, I know you and I chatted back and forth about Huns in the past, and I know the Worthington/Slayton/Ellsworth/Adrian area has a bunch. They're tougher to find, and even tougher to get permission to hunt, but they can be had. Every year we see at least a few coveys hunting family land in that area. Otherwise NW MN has okay numbers. For a better bet I'd head out-of-state...

I agree with Matt. I live down here by Worthington and although I have seen more coveys of Huns this year than in quite a while you would really struggle to get some shooting if you just hunted WMAs. The WMAs are for the most part set up for duck and pheasant hunting. Like everybody has said they are spotted most often along the small grain stubble fields and now the bean stubble with the soybeans starting to come out. Lots of times you will see them in the road ditch and then they get up and land on private ground and now you have to try and hunt down the farmer for permission. That isn't the easiest thing to do either with farmers having land spread out all over the place. You would probably have better luck somewhere else. Good luck whatever you do.
