New Water

Driftless

is straight down bedrock and then there is another step down and the deep crease in the middle hold ONE giant male brook trout with a black spot on the top of his head and over his left eye. Made all of the trout in the post look small.

I am battling this little pig and i see what i

think is a brown following it. It keeps following it to

about 10 feet out and then turns. It has a BIG black

spot on the top of its head over its left eye. Heron peck

I bet.

~It wasn't a brown~

21 or so male brookie in full fall spawning colors.

It did not come back.

I fished from 6:30 - 9:30 this morning. Landed two browns and ~30 brook trout. Most of the brookies small. This 12" was the best.

Either your brookies in soutwestern WI have more pronounced coloration or your camera is better. Probably both.

Naw. Brookies are brookies. They need the best cold water around. A sign of a healthy ecosystem. My best today was just caught at low light with a crummy camera, one which I accidentally stepped on and no longer works as well.

Here is the watercolor filter

I was fortunate to fish the other morning. The trout season is coming to an end. I put in a quick email to the landowner who kindly granted me access one final time for the season. Arrival 40 minutes from sunrise, I still needed my flashlight headset. I cut through the fields in the crisp moonlit night. Night creatures. There was the skunk I almost drove over on the main road. Getting up early, I always seem to run into the nocturnal creatures. Walking through the field with the clear sky transitioning one shade of lighter gray, an owl hoots off in the distance. Spooky.

Bzzz.. Mosquito. Pesky little devil. Of course I'm almost immune to these freeloaders and normally do not bother me one bit. I bought bug spray but did not bother putting any on and left in the trunk of the car. That was a mistake. Those bloodsuckers hovered and hovered all morning long. Practically drove me off the water. We had a dry spell however just the day before it rained, giving birth to a plethora of the next generation of mosquitoes. I first try a smaller pool, in the landowners back yard. First cast in darkness, I catch brookie after brookie, after brookie.

The 12" brookie was the highlight. I caught ~30 brookies total in just a few hours, plus a couple of decent browns in the 12-14" range. I guess not all outings can be spectacular, yet I'm thankful I made it out once again before the clock runs out September 30th - last day to trout fish.

Another baby but a good looking brookie.
