I do alot of my hunting on public land, more so with a bow than a rifle but I do a little of both. As far as advice the best thing I can tell you is to do your homework and get away from the crowds. Getting away from the crowds can be difficult on some pieces but sometimes its not hard if you find the right area. One spot I hunt about 500 acres gets hunted pretty heavy on about half of it, but the other half I have never seen another hunter back there because most people are too lazy to walk more than a couple hundred yards from the truck. So I have about 200 acres all to myself to hunt the only catch is that its about a mile walk. Another spot I hunt I use chest waders to cross about a 25 yards stretch of swamp to get to a piece of highland and once again almost everybody else is too lazy to do that so I have it all to myself. Start doing a little scouting and walking around and you should be able to find a pretty good spot with minimal pressure if your willing to put in a little extra work.

You may not want to or be able to wait, but if you can hold off a couple days usually public land quiets down pretty good come Monday. Now I know there will be less deer, only you can weigh one side of the question against the other.

Just my 2 cents.

walk it back and don't leave the stand. If it is public, most groups will pull out before 10 and then drive it around 1 or 2 and sit for the evening....I would wear lots of orange and sit all day if possible. the highland might be a great spot if you don't mind walking a mile in you waders....
