charging fish house 12V batteries while on the ice

maybe you have read some of my previous posts, but I am in the process of wiring my ice castle fish house I just bought.

I am wiring it for 12V lights using deep cycle batteries.

I have an idea to charge my batteries while on the ice, but I am not sure if it would work. My idea is to wire up a set of cables to the batteries and then place the cables in a weather proof box with some sort of terminals on the ends. When I wanted to charge my batteries I would just start up my truck, clamp on some jumper cables from my truck battery to the terminals and charge my batteries.

Would this work? or is there a better solution?

Yes, I have thought about a solar charger as well. Right now I am just trying to stay on a budget, so basically trying to get everything "roughed - in" and then later get everything hooked up.

If I went the solar charger route, what wiring would be need now to hook the solar charger up later?

I am using 14 guage wire, would it be as simple as just pigtailing some 14 guage wire on the outside of the house and then back to the battery compartment?

It would be simple to hook up a solar panel later if necessary. Just leave some terminals for them, they just run pos. Neg. I would say the shorter the length of wire and the larger would be better, as it would flow better to the battery.

If budget is an issue I can see it working to some degree. Not Ideal, but would work in a pinch. Maybe pick up a set of remote battery Jumper terminals (check out the speed shop catalogs) and wire them to a waterproof exterior grade outlet box.

In the end do the math first. Many times you end up spending almost as much trying to make something else work.

Another question would be what kind of lighting and other things are you going to be running? If its just some LED lights and a radio its one thing, but if its lots of lights and a Big Screen TV thats another.

i had sorta the same idea.. take and get a larger alternator and wire a deep cycle in the back of your truck then an extension cord to an outlet on the fish house. make any sense? drive to school come home from school watch some tv then charge on the way to places! make any sense?

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
