Ugly Drum Smoker

Recommended Posts

Just found out about these a couple weeks ago. There's a guy that came up with a Big Drum Smoker and sells them. They are expensive and shipping really kills the price, so people figured it out and now make their own and call em, Ugly Drum Smokers (UDS).

Well, I made one this past week with the help of a friend (to do welding). It's pretty cool! It'll hold smoking temp for 12 hours or more with little intervention. I'm still playing around with it, today I'm doing the first 10 hour smoke on it (pork butt for pulled pork).

Here's a pic of mine, prior to adding the grill grate and drilling holes in the lid. The weber grate sits 7 inches below the top of the barrel.

And here's the FireBasket.

Search for Ugly drum smoker and you'll find all kinds of info on them. Pretty neat.

You grilling surface needs to be 24" from the bottom of the fire basket, so on my barrel that was 7" down. On some barrels, a 22.5" weber cover will fit, on mine it's a little too small. Others have modified them so the cover fits. Then you can get 2 grates in.

Yesterday I did some Baby back ribs and a Pork butt on it. My wife said the ribs were the best she ever tasted. smile

Here's one person arsenal of UDS's.
