This possibly/probably has to do with all the cranking when it wouldn't start. If he hasn't already done them, it wouldn't hurt to run it for a bit and see if they come out of it. Seriously, after working on Vortec motors since their introduction in 1996, with hundreds of thousands of miles logged, I've only replaced maybe a dozen. Much different than the old "octopus" style from previous years.
