Tinkhamtown
1999 Polaris sportsman 335 with 2 – 4 wheel drive system. Had problems disengaging from 4-wheel drive to 2-wheel drive where the right front sticks in drive. Now last summer while trial riding the right front drive engaged and made the ATV turn hard to the right off into the woods and threw the rider (my youngest son) off into the trail hurting his shoulder. Want a safe 4 wheeler for my sons and grandsons to ride and wanted to know it any one had a fix for this problem. Or should I just get rid of it and get a new ATV? Dave S
The older machines did have problems disengaging the front hubs. After taking it out of 4x4 mode, some of the older Polaris machines required you to go in reverse while turning the handle bars side to side. If I remember right, it was an adjustment issue that took a simple modification to correct the issue.I've never heard of them engaging on their own (unless the rear wheels spun with the 4x4 button pushed) or just one side for that matter. Dave
Check the hub fluid for correct levels as well.
thenewguy
Clean and replace fluid. Also, over time the armature plates become magnetized (this is what engages the wheel) I would replace them too. (about $10 from dealer)
rundrave
there is also a specific torque sequence that needs to be applied to the castle nut in the hub to insure proper engagement i dont have my owners manual handy at the moment but can look them up later this evening
