Oooo Oooo that smell...

Question

My son and his wife just bought a house. It is a forclosure bank owned unit and they are getting a great deal on it. It does need some work here and there but they can move in on day one with no problems. Trouble is since it sat for so long the fridge and the dishwasher are very "ripe" and full of mold. Need to get all the ideas that there are out there as to how we can get rid of the mold and the smell. Thanks for your help! Take care and N Joy the Hunt././Jimbo

EDIT: Also posted in home improvement forum. Probably a better spot anyway

I work for a Public Housing Authority and the problem with having a stinky fridge is, that it gets into the insulation inside the fridge and is impossible to get rid of. The dishwasher is a different story, rub it down with bleach and run a few cycles through it and that usually does the job.

Run a some borax in the washer. After that, but a pan of fresh coffee grounds and boxes of baking soda in and close it up for a few days. It may take a few repeats. You can do the same with the fridge after a good scrubbing.

Years ago a friend of mine had a circuit breaker trip that provided power to his meat freezer. It went unnoticed and everything inside spoiled. I guess the freezer smelled pretty ripe. For weeks he tried everything... soap and water, bleach, baking soda, vinegar but no matter what he did he could not get rid of the smell. Finally someone told him to drag it outside and open it up and let it sit in the sun for a couple days. Believe it or not it worked. Seems between the UV and exhange of air it cleaned out the smell.

I got an old fridge for the garage that was moldy and stinky. after cleaning it out it still stunk. Someone told me to crumple a couple weeks worth of newspaper and stuff it in the fridge and leave it a few days.

I tried and it helped. Newspaper must be a good absorber of odors.

We had a breaker trip up at the cabin one summer during the week and a bunch of chicken in the freezer spoiled in it. The newspaper trick worked wonders. We also added boxes of baking soda as well. It took a few cycles of paper/baking soda, but the smell came out.
