Bighorn River, MT

Any of you guys ever fish this? Was there last year for one day in early August and had so much fun I thought I'd go back this year for a little more time.

Question is, when should I go? I could go anytime from late June through early Sept. I'm not a fly fisherman so hatches don't mean anything to me.

Suggestions?

traveler, I hunt all over, but this will be just a fishing venture for me and my brother who has never been in MT. We'd like to decide soon so he can put in for vacation.

I'll be out there in late May and July. Early trout is usually good when the rivers are not high, but being spring that can be a [PoorWordUsage] shoot. I was there last Sept and caught plenty of nice browns and rainbows. We also took a little trip out to my girlfriends family friend's ranch to go for brookies. That was simply unreal. I would really suggest giving flies a try out there. The fight is a lot better. Just my opinion.

Since you're headed to MT, I guess the Croix is all mine! laugh

Yeah, for one weekend this summer the Croix is all yours. Better take advantage! smile

they'll probably crank the flows way up in late may-june as the snowmelt tumbles into the reservoir...... when the river is ragin, i doubt you'd wanna be tossing spinning gear, cuz the increased water volume dislodges the moss and you'd be reeling in moss balls all day long..... there's suspended moss everywhere when it gets bad....

flows should stabilize by july for sure..... i think it's a decent snow year, so flows shouldn't end up dropping too much and the river should be more than fishable through july and august and into sept...... in drought years, some of the side channels get too shallow through those months......

the fishing is always good, just a matter of what flow you want to fish it at..... generally anything from 2000 to 6 or 7 thousand is good, with 2500 to 4000 being ideal..... but you'll catch fish regardless....

and while i'm sure you're happy tossin hardware, this is one river where if you've ever had any itch to try fly fishing, you should give it a go....... the nymphing is as easy as it gets anywhere and you'll catch more numbers with fly than spin gear-- plus all the fish are huge cuz the little guys don't typically leave the weeds till they are big enough to fend off the monsters in there..... so unlike streams around here where tossing raps and spinners will consistently net you bigger fish, there isn't much of a size disparity between techniques on that one......

anyway, have fun.... think i'm goin in early may.....

There's some great tips there. Thanks! That's the kind of response I was hoping for from FM members.

Any idea in a typical year when you can expect 2500 - 4000? I mean is that normally late June into July kind of thing of does it change dramatically day to day with precip, etc?

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
