Advice on a Clam 5600

I have a chance to buy a new Clam 5600 at a good price. I haven't seen it, just looked at the ad on line. What do owners think of it? I read some stuff on here and it looks like there are mixed feelings about a suitcase style house vs a tub sled type rig. Those tub ones seem nice but the weight gets up there pretty fast. The 5600 doesn't seem to have any chairs in it and hauling equipment may be cumbersome. How do you deal with those things?

I have an older Otter Lodge that is a 4 person rig with a bench seat. Problem is that it weighs so much I can't really get it into the truck myslef. It is used and I'm thinking I may get rid of it as at most I normally fish with only one other person.

Thanks for your time and opinions.

Just got done fishing with my wife and my daughter in our 5600. For two adults I think the Clam 5600 is a great house. I would venture to say it would be a little tough to pull through the snow by hand. Great for driving out. TOUGH to fish out of when its really windy.Over all we are happy with the 5600. It has earned a place in our garage. Good luck.

I have fished out of one of these for the last 3 winters. I bought a sled to get all of my gear out. If you do not have much snow on the ice it's easy to pull. But man if there is fresh snow down it's a pain to pull out. Once the house is set up I really like it. I like it to fish out of better than the flip over ones. I bought this one because of the floor and taking my youngest son out fishing. He just turned 7. This house is a 2 person house. I don't think it is too bad to set up, granted it's not as easy as a flip over, but I can get it set up pretty quick. As far as fishing in the wind, I got a couple of the tie downs for it. Basically it's two screws that I put in the corner of the holes and your all set. I am going to be selling mine, and down sizing to a one man. The only reason I'll be selling mine is because I just got a 6 X 8 perm to take my kids out fishing. I don't take them out till I can drive out any way. If I didn't get this perm I would keep it. Yes they do have some neg points but over all I like it.

I like my 5600. I don't drag mine out. I have a small utility trailer that I keep all my gear on and pull it out with my ATV or truck depending on conditions. That way, when I'm ready to go fishing, I just hook my truck to the trailer and go.

I don't have any problem with the wind although I haven't had mine long enough to test it in a wind with no snow on the ice.

As far as seating, I picked up a couple of small folding chairs. I just fold them up and leave them inside the suitcase.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
