pinkfloyd4ever
Just got an old beater truck. I have 2 questions. 1. The wipers will only work when weather is above freezing, below freezing the motor makes noise but wipers won't move. Would a squirt or 2 of WD-40 help this or just suck it up and buy a new part?2. This is on the V6 engine- how do you reasonably get to the starter on it? Its on the passenger side bottom, but above the exhaust system. Looking up from the creeper it was a very tight squeeze. Thanks
Jeremy airjer W
1. What happens if you pull on the wiper arms with the switch on (be prepared for the arms to start moving!)2. The lower bell housing unbolts from the transmission. There are a couple of support bars that need to be removed as well. Once the lower housing is of the you'll be able to access the bolts that hold the starter in place. Once the started is loose you will be able to finagle it out. Its been a while since I changed one in a full size with a v-6 but I'm pretty sure that will get you started in the right direction.
pinkfloyd4ever
With the wipers, haven't tried to tug them to get them moving, so I will have to try that later on.Sounds like the starter will be a 2 man job for me and my buddy and his collection of snapon's
Hafnutz
I have seen the nuts that hold the wiper arms in place loosen up. Flip up the cap on the bottom end of the wiper arm and check the nuts. 10 mm I believe.
Whoaru99
I just put a new wiper motor on my 94 truck a month or two ago.The wipers would just quit working at random. Usually, by pulling on the wiper arm or giving the wiper motor a whack, they would work for a while. Kept slowly happening more often. It was probably just a relay/bad contact somewhere but I replaced the whole wiper motor assembly. It wasn't hard, but it was a bit more work than I was expecting.Mine is a V8 and the starter wasn't too hard on that one. My advice though....spend the extra $ and get one from the dealer. I went though two or three from one of the big name aftermarket parts places over the course of a year or two. The one from the dealer has been fine for at least a couple years now.
BoxMN
I did what Whoaru did, about 3 months ago. Mine woould work intermittently. I took them off "Wrong" and learned the easy way..Easy way is to take the plastic off between the hood and windshield. Then you can get at the bolts better. Make sure the washer fluid tubes are correctly placed when you put the plastic back on, or you will be like me and have to do it about three times! doh!!!edit - oh yeah, motor was about $35 I think. Should have done it much earlier.
crothmeier
you can buy a cap/cover that goes over the wiper motor under the hood to fix this. about a $20 part. I had that happen on my '88, '93 and now '97. i also fixed it on my dads '94. The contacts on the cap get coroaded(sp) and they work and stop and work and stop. try tapping on the motor box with them on and see if that starts them. if so thats your problem. Napa has the part. This is alot easier than taking off the wipers or replacing the motor.
Jeremy airjer W
Its called a pulse module. If your handy with a soldering iron you can try resoldering the main joints. The crack with time. Could save yourself even more!
Whoaru99
Yeah, probably could replace/fix just that. But, I figured with >200K miles the rest of the motor assembly probably wasn't too far behind.
pinkfloyd4ever
Ok, so if I gently pull on the wiper arms they will engage. When it is above freezing they seem to work fine. I'll try tightening the bolts and go from there
PierBridge
That's what mine did and my friend Soldered it up like airjer described above. It's really quick and quite easy to do. I wish I would have took some pics of the process.
Jeremy airjer W
Pulse module Check these joints It doesn't hurt to touch up all of the ones that go to the main connector

Until, wouldn't you know, driving home in a rain storm from Rainy Lake. It was sorta a pain in the rump to see... My advice is to fix it one way or the other because it will eventually stop working, when most inconvenient, probably.
crothmeier
I just hit it with my hand, no maglite or tire iron needed! Its a $17 fix, hit up napa and get a replacement cap.
Tyler23
well my truck has had this problem for as long as i can remember since it use to be my dads truck and he got it in 94. but my buddy replaced his wiper motor and everything and it still didnt fix it so im just gunna stick with the flashlight method. its not like it rains everyday around here so once in awhile doesnt hurt me.
