Will it fit?

I am looking at upgrading from a Ford Ranger to an F150. I am wondering if anyone has a Fishtrap Yukon that they haul in the back of a short box (5.5 ft) F150. I've measured the yukon and I measured around 65 inches long all folded up with the cover on. I just want to make sure if I end up with a short box that I'll be able to haul it around with the tailgate closed or else should I be looking at a 6.5 foot box. By the way, I'm looking at 2005 and newer vehicles. Thanks for your help in advance.

According to the Ford HSOforum, their "5.5 foot" box is 67 inches long. Simply take your fish house with you when you go car shopping to make 100% sure, but if you measured it accurately at 65 inches, you should be 99.9% sure.

Looks like they gave the "6.5 foot" box an extra 0.8 inches (78.8), and they gave the "8 foot" box an extra 1.4 inches (97.4).

I agree with aanderud.

Take your portable with you when you go truck shopping or when you are out on a test drive, swing by your house load it up there.

Got a buddy that bought a new truck a few years ago. He didn't take his portable with him nor did he stop by his house to try it either. He did take a tape measure along though and measured the box. He thought he was safe and clear with enough room in the box for his portable so he signed on the dotted line and drove his new truck home. Only to find out that the measurement of the portable that he took prior to purchasing the truck was of the sled. The metal frame of his portable extends about 1/2 inch on either side of the sled. So when he tried to close the tailgate, he couldn't. His portable was about an inch longer than the truck bed. Man was he upset. Unloaded the portable, grabbed his paperwork and headed back to the dealer for a truck with a bigger bed.

So definately take your portable (or whatever else you plan to haul on a regular basis aka dog kennel, decoy bags, gun cases, float tubes etc.) with you or make a quick stop back home on the test drive and make sure it will fit before you sign the dotted line. That's what I plan to do when I go SUV shopping this summer. The misses wants me to get a smaller SUV (better gas mileage she says) but I told here I would just as long as my portable fits back there without me bungee cording the backend shut. We'll see what I end up with this summer for a new vehicle. :-)

Just my two cents

My buddy has an F150 short box and a Fishtrap X2 and it doesn't fit. He has to strap the tailgate shut.

Why doesn't he just leave it down? My X2 also doesn't fit in the back of my shortbox. I could get it to close if I really wanted to, but it is easier to just run a strap across the top of the X2.

I own a 05 F-150 S-crew and a Yukon and it fits just fine. I put a roll cover on the truck and leave my fishing gear in the back all winter long.

Even if it does fit I'd go with the 6 1/2 box if you have a choice. I got the 6 1/2 box on mine and it's nice to be able to fit some gear in between the house and the tailgate. I leave my stuff in there all Winter too. Just close the lid and lock the tailgate.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
