Strikemaster Lazer Auger Question?

Jig Man

Recommended Posts

I got a new 2 hp 8" Strikemaster Lazer Auger this year and it runs great. The only problem I have is that it seems to catch on the bottom of the ice. It almost seems like it doesn't have enough power to punch through the last little bit. It cuts through the ice like butter until the bottom. Has anyone else had this problem or know of what may be causing this? Thanks in advance for any help!!

My friends and I all have the same problem with our lazer augers (3 HP & 2 HP). I usually just lift mine up slightly (a couple of inches), get the auger spinning again, and then ease it back down. I don't know exactly what causes this (maybe water?), but mine almost always goes right through if I follow those steps.

I have an old model 30 Jiffy auger and mine does the same thing when it gets to the bottom of the hole. I have the auger nice and sharp and the point as well. I just figure out how thick the ice is then when I drill a new hole I ease up on pushing down and hold on tight. Would be nice to know if this problem can be fixed or not...

one other thing to check would be the governor. Some of the governor settings on the lazers barely let the motor make any power. When the governor is set correctly or taken off they drill a hole at least twice as fast with no lag at the bottom of the hole. Basically take a 2 horsepower motor govern it to 1 horsepower. check with the guys at big lake they will help u out. If u would like to see what your auger is capable off reach under the gas tank grab ahold of the throttle and drill a hole. good luck

I had the same problem with my 10" SM that I bought this year. I was getting kind-of disappointed. Then I drilled through some sand someone put on the lake that was covered in snow and had to buy new blades. The new blades were like a hot knife through butter all the way through the bottom of the ice! If I ever find out who put that sand in that spot I would buy them a beer grin

I went to strikemaster and had a similar issue with my LM8. He checked the pitch and said it was a little aggresive. He said he could change it but it wouldn't cut as fast as it does. I said to just leave it because, like said before, if you just lift it bit and set it back down it breaks through.

If there is more than 18" of ice you will want to lift the auger up just before reaching the bottom to get all the ice chips out of the hole before getting to the bottom layer of ice which is the hardest layer. If this doesn't work you can play with the governor as others said but be careful. If you do more than 1-2 turns it may cause your motor to blow up.. When you run the motor at a higher horspower it will wear faster on the auger.. (just an fyi)..
