It is Scary. The distance between your transducer and GPS antennae is now much more important. If you have two GPS units and an Interlink, you almost have to have two "high accuracy" units or your potential "error" will be twice the length of the boat, which in most cases is about 40 feet.

How long before H-Bird introduces a locator for the ice that uses the side imaging technology so you can pinpoint where the fish are in relation to the hole your fishing? Unless they already have. I've been out of this for too long.

Thanks for all the info guys!! just a couple more questions.... taw, does the new 50 channel antenna come on the 09 798?? thanks again for the info!!

The 50-channel GPS receiver comes standard on the 1100, 900, and 700 series Birds, so yes, you get the 50-channel receiver with the 798.

Other changes to the 798 for '09 are better screen resolution (640x640 this year) and a slot for a second memory card.

I have the new HBs on my HSOforum. Shipping is free and the HB units are in-stock and ready to ship. If interested you can check them out at

taw.

If the middle section is the water column and I'm set at 100 feet scan left and right, and I am in 20 feet of water, then am I only truly seeing 80 feet of sidescan?

Also, if I am in 20 feet of water, why isnt there an ability to zoom up the side image, lets say half way, and eliminate the top ten feet of water column. That would seem like an extremely easy software upgrade to me, but..... I could be wrong, its happened before.

Right now, the only way to zoom in SI, is with the box... correct?

you are seeing a 160 foot scan with the boat in 20 feet of water with sidescan set to 100 feet(80 feet each direction). To date no zoom is available in the software except the zoom box you can move anywhere on the screen.

Got a chance to use the 1197 last week, and wow is all I can say for now.

I love my 997, but...... the bigger screen is definitly a great option.

I was going to show some friends some of my screen captures on the unit, and found out that the 1197 would not read my screen captures that were on my 2G card, which I thought was odd, and my 997 would not read/show the screen captures that I took with the 1197. Certainly, not a big problem, but I thought that it would process it.
