Trailer Receiver hitch

Recommended Posts

I don't have a receiver hitch on my pickup and I'm thinking of buying one.Right now I just have a ball hitch on the rear bumper. I looked at the ones at Walmart and a few other places. I tow a boat in the summer and I'm wondering if the walmart one would be good enough or should I look else where? Also do you have to drill holes to mount them or do they attach with what is already there? Thanks in advance for any help.

I have a 2000 Ford F-150 4x4

I can't personally say I have installed a hitch on an F-150 as both of mine both came with the tow package already installed. However, my uncle installed one on his 97 F-150 and I have also helped my friend install one on his Escape. I am unsure of the brands that Wal-mart has but Fleet Farm I believe carries the reese brand hitches that mount underneath the vehicle. (that is where my uncle picked his up at) You may have to order it in as they probably won't have it in stock, but for the most part they are specifically made for the vehicle and mount/bolt right to the frame. The mounting holes should already be there so it should be a straight forward process. Definately worth the investment.

Good luck!

Steve

Well I know its a LONG time after my first post on this topic but I bought a Receiver hitch from Menards and I got the Reese hitch. It bolted up nice (No drilling) and I did use the lock tite like suggested. Thanks to those that replied and it I really love my new hitch.

I installed a new rigid hitch on a vehicle the other day. Its amazing how fast and easy they are getting to install!! Both the hitch and wiring done in less than an hour.

Remember the days of buying a one size fits all, you then have to drill holes, shim it, remove bumper, spare tire, and exhaust to modify them. It was a 4 hour job, and you were worn out afterwards.

Don't forget to check the trailer ball nut. I towed snowmobiles from Minnetonka to Red Lake. On the return trip just before Kelliher the trailer started swaying like a dog wagging its tail. Talk about major pucker factor. eek The tongue was cradled in the safety chains as designed. My buddy stayed with the trailer and I went back to West Winds and they had the right size ball.
