mono fishing line?

Hiya -

I still cast with mono sometimes - either 20 or 25# XT or Big Game. Mostly early season with a small buzzbait, Bomber Long A or zara spook on a flipping stick. I know we're all into 80# braid and big rods, but the truth is the muskie hasn't been born you can't whip on 20lb mono and a flipping stick...

Not so much with the Dacron. To me, no reason to use it with Superlines available. Lord how I hated Dacron. Had to retie and respool all the time, soaked up water like mad, huge diameter... Bleh. Hooray for Spectra fibers smile

Cheers,

A lot of Muskie anglers still use mono on their trolling rods. I guess it has it's place, however it does a poor job handling large baits that you have to work to impart the action on the bait. It just has to much stretch to be very effective.

thanks guys,

the main reason i'm asking is when i was a kid, before i learned how to use casting reels, i fished with mono. it seemed then i could'nt miss a fish on a top water bait. then i started using casting reels and dacron with leaders and i was having so much trouble hooking fish it was driving me nuts. Gramps finally got me to do the wait on weight deal and it improved drammaticly but to this day i think i still miss more now than i did then. in fact i almost never had a miss then. and that's the only difference i can think of. just line.

so, i was thinking (oops) about trying out some mono on one reel for tops and see how that goes this year. next question. think i'm nuts? or has anyone heard of this being done and working before?

Maybe due the stretch in mono there was a little bit more time before the hooks were set, so the fish had a chance to actually hit it. If you are setting at the same time with superline and missing fish, that's the only explanation I can think of.

Had the chance to fish tarpon in Cost Rica with my father-in-law a couple years ago and everything was on 20 lb mono. Other than a leader to combat the abrasion from their bass-like teeth it was straight mono. With the drag set right we were able to land 60-100 lb fish. It took some patience but I sure have more respect for mono after seeing that. Silver Thread AN40 was the line of choice BTW.

Take care - erik

yeah, that's my thought too. or i was just a better fisherkid than fisherman, lol. was just another thing i wanted to try. and thanks, i don't feel so ''out there'' with my thinking on this anymore.

hey hugo, do tarpon really make a muskie seem docile?

Last time I worked at Gander (the 11th), all Guide Series rods/reels/combos were on sale, half off, so I'd say you could lol. I'd go with the Pro Select, 7' MH. Should be around 30-40 after the sale.

As far as the reel, I'd go with a Pflueger Trion, wide-spool. Those're around $100, but one of my favorite overall baitcasters. That wide spool will be nice too.

Not sure if I'd ever describe a ski as "docile" but I would maybe say muskies are to tarpon what big sunfish are to smallies confusedif that makes sense. I'm sure we've all said at one time or another, "I'm glad sunfish don't get to be bigger!" Well a tarpon is a [PoorWordUsage]-off muskie that got bigger. We fished for 3 days and hooked up with about 35 fish and landed 15 of them. After a 20-30 minuted fisght with one of those guys you NEED to sit down for a water or beer just to get ready for the next one. The added fun of tiger and hammerhead sharks around made it alot of fun. A trip I'd recommend to anyone who wins the lottery!!

my bro lives down there (florida) now and when i was a young man i lived there for awhile. caught my fair share of fish there but never got around to tarpon. i will though. maybe in the next couple years. my bro knows a guide i've went out with a few times, not a paid deal just fishing. after tarpon i want to try my hands, arms, legs and back at some alaskan halibut. a friend at work caught a 300 pounder. and said it was a small one compared to others boated that day. now that sounds like one time and done right there. sleep

IMO Halibut fishing is kind of boring. I would only go halibut fishing again because the meat is amazing but other then that, not too exciting. You drop the bait down with a 5lb weight. Once they are on you just winch them up with a huge salt water reel. I caught one, it was 225 or something and hardly put of a fight. Imagine cranking up a huge saucer. lol

If you up in AK go salmon fishing in the open water with light tackle, now that is a ton of fun!!! Or go wade the many streams for trout on a fly rod!!!
