trunkmonkey
My 40hrs mariner is locked up so im thinking about putting on a similar motor probly 65hrs. Can i do this by myself if i get a friend to help with the lifting?the locked up motor has power trim/tilt but new one likely wont.
marine_man
You should be able to... It'll be heavy, but with 2 guys you should be able to do it.Use your tongue jack, or a jack, to you advantage - crank your tongue jack as low as it will go. Put some wood blocking under the lower unit of your old motor. Pull the bolts / clamps/ etc, then while one guy balances the motor, the other guy cranks the tongue jack up - that should get the transom low enough to get the motor off without lifting it (which is why you may need to use a regular jack)Reverse the order for the new motor and you should be set.marine_man
wakeguy
Getting the engine off and on shouldn't be too difficult. After you put the new engine on make sure that you adjust the shift/throttle cables to make sure that the engine isn't reving up before the shift cable shifts into forward or reverse. Crusty old Swede
Lots of motors have lifting eyes or holes to screw in lifting eyes. Break out the come along and make an A frame and you can do it yourself safer than 2 or 3 strong guys trying to hold it up. Any of your friends have an automotive engine hoist?
