I have a beavertail long tail that I bought last summer. A 13hp honda on a 1548mv riveted jon. A little slow, but does run aprox. 12mph with 2 guys and gear. Fits my needs.

I went with a longtail because of price. Short tails(surface drives) are the newest thing and are special. But also command a special price.

All the brands out there are made of the highest quality, and built to last. I am not brand loyal, and its kind of like Ford vs. Chevy vs. Dodge to me. Same with the engines that the manufacturers put on they're frames. Some like honda, others kohler, or briggs.

I and other I know running mud motors are happy with they're choices. From 9hp hondas to 35 kohlers.

This post may not help you with your choice, but there is no bad mud motor out there. just personal choice, I guess.

Tyler23, I searched a long time last year to find a motor 20hp or smaller. I watched several hunting forum clasifieds, and craigs list. I contacted a prodrive dealer in minnesota city(winnona)to keep an eye out. I believe its "Big River Prodrive". Also "Midwest Outboard" in hastings.

I would also get in touch with Shroeders Skybuster blinds in St. Peter. He doesn't deal in used motors, but I'm sure he is, or will be aware of used motors in the area for sale.

With so many guys switching to surface drives, and if your patient, you will find a good used motor in the HP range you want.
