I agree with River Runt, use a come along or winch and you should be fine. I've seen this done on the lake the most.

Bergmanus, I see no problem with a skid house. Drop downs cost a lot more. The only downside is you can't be very mobile (Going from lake to lake)but you can still move it around the lake with your truck and just pulling it.

For my peaked roof i used a 2x10 as long as the house is wide, yes you're thinking heavy, but find the center and draw a line to the bottom corner on each side. cut on that line and you have a triangle of sorts. I didnt go the the corner, i left an inch on each end for strength and then angled up to the peak. (if that makes and sense at all)

hey bassman, what were the dimensions or your cutouts in the floor?

Not very scientific. They happen to be 33"x12". I had cut holes that worked around the 2x4's. The 2x4's split the big hole in half to make the individual holes. Actually worked well. I have an 8" auger, but i wanted to be able to drill 10's if need be, so I left room for that. Even after I put in my 2x4 hole cover supports underneath, I still have plenty of room to drill.

I am planning on building a 10x7 on skids. Some fellas are telling me that a house on skids is a waste of time. Is it that hard to get on and off the lake? I can't afford a fancy drop down trailer and don't see the big deal in just putting it on skids.

BassMan25 those houses are pretty much identical to the one I want to build. Do you have any pictures from when you were putting them together?

Also, a peaked roof down the center...how do you that? Does anyone have pictures?

JimJim the house looks great so far!

I did some extensive research about how to construct my house. I talked to alot of guys in the area and asked their opinion on how I should build it. The majority said because of weight and cost, that I should just use the treated 2x8 skis. They indicated that it would be easy to move around. Time will tell if I made the right decision on that.

I don't have any progression pics of when we were building it. I wish I would have now so I could share them with you.

I peaked my roof very minimally with the same metal material that I used on the siding. The rafters were again made with 2x2 material. We also put foam insulation paneling in the roof. If I had to guess, I would say the total incline from peak to the edge is maybe 3 inches? Not that much, just enough to easily get snow off the top.

Yes! insulate the floor, and place your heater as close to the floor as possible. that will help with the cold lower half

I have been told to move my remington heater down closer to the floor. In the directions for installation it says something about the height from the floor, but I should have put it in lower anyway.

My floor was not insulated and is very cold, also it makes the ice under the house melt away a little.

I used pole Barn steel, pretty durable, low-maintenance, and weighs about the same as plywood.

If you check a local lumberyard, sometimes they have leftover pcs you can pick up for less than ordering new. Usually you dont need very lond pcs for the fish house, and there is a variety of different colors

whats the best thing to use for the outside sheating?

I used aluminum. I fould some very thin corrugated stuff. It was previously used on something else, but for 10 - 4x8 sheets for $40 how could I pass. I used galanized metal flashing on a roll for the roof. Found it at Menards. It was either 28 or 30" wide. Took 3 strips for the roof, but left a good amount to over lap them plus an inch over hang all the way around.

For the roof, I would go with the one piece rubber roof from Menard's. If you ever have a hole in it, just go to the hardware store and fix it with a tire patch. These rubber roofs are very durable.

Does the roof come in one big continuous piece? Never heard of or seen these before. Sounds interesting.

I like the peaked roof down the center, seems like it would be easier when putting up the walls (siding & paneling)...does anybody have any pictures of this?

BassMan25 thanks for the help, what you said sounds great I understand what you are saying for the most part but a picture from someone would be very helpful. First time building a shack...$$$ is the issue so I want to do things right the first time.

You can also put a gradual crown on the roof(use a 2"x8" cut down) from one side to the other instead of a sharp peak in the center. Then you can use one sheet from one side to the other without cutting it. Just bend and screw every 12" across the roof boards.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
