Silly robin

Wish-I-Were-Fishn

Question

So who would have thunk it, yesterday (Jan 12th) at 7:30 AM I heard the distinct sound of a robin coming from the [PoorWordUsage] apple tree at my office. Sure enough there was a robin eating the dried up (and frozen!!) crab apples on the tree!!

I know they are one of the last birds to fly south, but this guy really missed his flight.

Is this some sort of record, or has anyone else ever seen one this late (or early!) in the year?

Maybe it's going to be an early spring. My Bass Pro Marine sales catalog also showed up that same day! One can only hope.

I believe there's a certain population of robins that will spend the winter around the metro area and Mississippi river valley. I've had them at our heated water bowl until a couple weeks ago, and saw them last year in February not far from where I am in south metro. Cool pix. Fruit and berries seems to be there food source during the winter.

Several years ago I was in my backyard in January and heard the sound of a robin. I found it and several others bathing in a spring fed creek. I never knew that some overwinter in MN. I think they like a source of water also. I have seen up to 50 on some days all around the creek waiting their turn.
