Nils Augers Made in the USA! really?

If mines been in the trailer outside all week it will take 5-6 pulls to fire. I don't use the primer, the 1 time I did it took about 10 pulls to fire. Still trying to figure out the right sequence to get it to pop right off cold. If its been indoors or warmed up she fires on a short pull.

Anyone want to trade their Nils for a Model 30??? cool

Not a chance !

Sold my model 30 to my buddy's son who has a younger back then mine.

Croixflats When cold try full choke for 1 pull and then take it off and see if that helps. Have you gone through 3 tanks of gas yet ?

I don't know if they make any in the US and really don't care. I bought the six inch power auger about three winter ago and next to a flasher, it's my best purchase for ice fishing. Had a trip up north a couple weeks ago and since everyone else had their auger I left mine behind, which only reaffirmed how glad I am to own a Nils. I cut a number of holes with some older SMs--what a chore. Hard starting, heavy-hauling, and having to lean on it to cut. Plus it took me 2-3 times as long to cut a hole. If you're serious about ice fishing and you cut a lot of holes, do yourself a favor and get one.

I'm on my 4th tank. I usually have to keep it on full choke till it starts or I'll be pulling it 6 times or more. I guess its no big deal using the choke but I am a litle surprised having have to when it sits only 20 minutes. It does start good when its half way warm out.

I do the same with mine.

When it's cold (first time out). I choke it, prime 3 times, then it fires on the second or third pull (if I'm quick enough, I can turn the choke off when it fires and it will run) Otherwise, I turn the choke off fully and it starts the next pull.

Yes, if it sits for more than a half an hour I will need to choke it for a pull or two. My snowblower is the same way. I don't think that is a symptom of anything being wrong.

i agree if they made a 10" that would be sweet...10" nils would be the best auger of all time imo....we need to let them know whats up.

i was wondering how well they re-open holes too before i bought one...well it shreds right through no problem....another cool thing is the powerhead and handle is small so it can easily fit in the tight corners of the wheelhouse.....i'm a force to be reckoned with when i got my nils and slush catcher lol.

with mine i prime it 4-5 times on full choke and give her about 3-5 pulls and she pops off...like dtro said if i'm quick enough i can flip the switch up and keep it goin...but if it happens to kill i put the switch all the way up and it fires on the 1st pull...super quite and smooth running.

if i let it sit sometimes it will fire up after a pull or two...if not i have to full choke it and give it a couple pulls then do the same thing as earlier.

i've had it happen quite a bit where it's sat for a few days and to my surprise i prime it and give it 1 pull and she fires up and i happen to hit the switch up and she stays goin....i've noticed it has started better and cut better the more i've ran it...i'm only about 4-5 tanks deep so far...2 of those were on the break in.

Later today when I go to fleet farm in Wisconsin I'll pick up 5 gallons of non-oxy. Been meaning to do that but you know how it is if you dont make a special trip one forgets, out of sight out of mind deal. I have used the Amsoil from day one.

Thanks for the tips, I know the auger will only get better the more I use it, not that it needs to get better.

Right now I'm waiting for the new cutting head so I can send the other one off to Surface Tension to get sharpend. I hit some sand in the ice that some wheeler guys left out there after they got stuck on the beach and they brought it out on the river.

Guess I am not sure where they are made but I have owned and returned a Strike Master, and a Jiffy and the only way you would get my Nils from me is to give me enough money to buy a brand new one. They start when you need them to , they cut fast, and they don't fall apart!

I had already created a post on the Nils hand auger, bragging about how awesome it is. tedl isn't exaggerating. My buddies blades might need a tune up, but I would say without any hesitation, it was two to one. My other buddies' SM hand auger? 3 to 1, hands down.

I will buy a Nils power auger one of these years. The only negative with hand augers is that they don't clean the slush out of the hole as well as power augers do. But with the Nils not "biting" at the end of the cut, makes up for having to spoon out the extra slush.

Do you fish with Rapala's their a fin product also. Just giving you a hard time. The Nils fits in to our scandinavian roots here in Minnesota. Support our ancestors along with purchasing one from Outdoor pro store. grin

I'm sure they are nice, but the extra cost is not worth it to me. I am of the opinion when I'm on the ice, it really does not matter is it takes me an extra minute to drill a few holes, I'm out there to enjoy myself. Whatever you use, just make sure to have fun!!!!

  • we are 'the leading edge' HSO Creators

One other thing you have to consider is the rated service life of the Nils Engine vs the others. 600 hrs for the Nils vs 240 for the others.

The Nils motor is industrial grade and built to take a pounding. The other motors are consumer grade.

Add in that it's light, fast, and cuts with little effort and in my opinion is a better investment of your money over the long haul.

Like most things, you get what you pay for.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
