Battery meter

Isn't there something I can attach to my battery or plug into a 12v outlet that will tell me the status of my battery charge? Something that has red, yellow and green status lights or similar to tell me to charge my batt before I have it go dead in the house.

I purchased a small Minnkota battery tester that you just hold on your termals every once in a while. I think that i bought in on clearance from walmart for only 5 or 7 dollars. Im sure you should be able to find something like that in any equipment store.

I have a couple of "testers" at home but don't know how they work and have never used them. They came in a package and I wanted 1 thing out of that package. I will have to look at them to see if they will work. They are the type with the needle window and various settings on a switch.

The best option I see would be a unit that has a 12 volt plug in that you can insert into your outlet and it will tell you the voltage, etc. Simple and easy to use.

I will check into the Minnkota type model at the big W if my other "testers" won't do it.

Any volt meter will do, you can get cheap ones for 5 bucks or so. The trick if you are using a voltmeter is that you don't get "red/yellow/green", so you need to know what voltage corresponds to "full" versus "50% full" versus "nearly empty". Most multimeters I've seen have probes that will fit inside most any standard outlet, so they should suit your needs just fine. If you are near a harbor freight, I know you can get uber cheap ones there, just google the phrase "7 Function Digital Multimeter" for a sampling.

Here's a chart that you can use to translate voltage to charge fullness (assuming 12 volt battery, of course)

Interesting! I would've never though that 12.06 V would be considered half charged or gone (depends on glass half full or half empty!). I'm going to print this out and keep it in the fish house!

Isn't there some manufactured kind of charger I can plug into my trucks 7 pin to charge the batteries? I think it was drive and charge or something?

Another question, if you get to a certain point, does it start draining faster?

There's a fair amount of technical detail regarding charges and batteries. Many variables to consider, including temperature, etc.

I got that chart from a random RV enthusiast's HSOforum. The values were somewhat imperically derived from his own experiences. You can read about it here:

Some of the interesting points:

it's also important to note that the battery voltage will be affected by temperature.... The chart above, and most other ratings applied to Lead/Acid batteries assume that the battery is at room temperature: 21 degrees C or about 70 degrees F. As the temperature of the battery drops, so will the fully-charged voltage reading. I have found a lot of conflicting information about this phenomenon, but it seems to be safe to say that for each 10 degrees F drop in temp, you can expect to see the voltage drop about a tenth of a volt. (.10 volt) That means that a battery at 32 degrees F with a no-load voltage reading of 12.35 volts is fully charged

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
