Which Auger

It doesnt have a problem with the carbs, just a problem with people. The engines/carbs are the same thing that strikemaster uses.

Its more of a problem with people not taking care of it. You got to remember to run sea foam or stabill through it and then run it out of gas at the end of the season. If you leave untreated gas in it your asking for trouble.

I also bought the 10" SM laser at gander mountain, only because the 8" were out, but I payed 319 for it. It does run a little slow drilling, but does the job just fine, of course I had a hand crank before, so anything is better. but a lot of people must be buying the 8" if gander was out too. I have to say I do like that 10" hole though.

Well I just got back from cabelas and boy they didnt have much for augers. They only had 4 out for display. From looking at the SM those handles look cheap and look like they would break easy especially being used in sub zero temps. The jiffy wasnt to bad. It really didnt weigh that much at all. I grabbed both brands and there wasnt much of a weight difference. I liked how well built the Jiffy was and solid it was. SM was built good too but I didnt like how the fact that it was made of plastic.

Its still up in the air on which brand and model i am looking to get. I would like to get it before i head back up to ely but if not thats fine. I would like to try both brands out but that may not happen.

Thanks for the info and help. keep it coming!

The plastics handels are actually one thing I like about the SM. I had a jiffy for 10+ years and still do but I have had a SM electric for 2 years (same plastic handel) and I just bought a SM lazer. I have had the electric fall from an upright position onto the ice when -20 and still not break but when it is -20 and you grab the auger with your bare hands or light gloves you dont get instant frost bite like with the metal handels. Lighter too. If you are going to bang it up alot the jiffy is tougher but you pay for it in weight and the SM cuts much quicker than my jiffy model 30. My 0.02.

Dont forget to take a close look at the Icegator No more stinky fumes spilled gas gas on your gloves or keeping the fish away several models now great for inside a shack too! Best investment/invention since the spud bar!

I'd have to disagree with that. An electric auger is about as useful as an electric car. Perfect for a small segment of the population, but not even close to a practical gas engine replacement for most people. Different strokes for different folks.

I guess if you ONLY fish out of a permanent, you'd never need anything else. But almost everyone I know will get on a kick at least now and then and try to chase down some fish when they aren't biting. Limiting oneself to 20 holes or so (which I think is an optimistic count) could be painful.

I think on Saturday when I was out, I drilled like 40+ holes, and we were actually on fish relatively quickly, not a lot of dinking around. It adds up when you try 3 spots, and you drill over a dozen in each spot. You'd be very lucky to do that with any electric auger. Even though I hate the stink of fumes, I think it would stink worse to have my auger purchase dictate my fishing style.

you run the lazer mag? i have the mag 2000 8 1/4 inch and put a 6 inch lazer on it for chasing crappie and gills. also nice for perching as you can drill a few holes lookikg for those buggers. dave genz told me when i asked him what lazer to get he said" 6....what ever pan fish you cant pull threw that hole i will come and drill you a bigger one and give you the auger" i have drilled so many with it now i just get mad seeing those 10 " holes stepped threw 2 last year that were slushed over was warm that night and first thing sat morning at 715 am looked like i was hit by a bat on my shin....done rambling now

The Ice gator will drill quite a few holes Brian. One could change change a battery real fast to continue on drilling if need be.

They are a very nice auger and with my Nils auger, they cut very fast and its quite easy.

They also make a 2 battery unit that will cut many more holes than the 1 battery unit.

If one puts a 6 inch auger on one, you would not believe how fast they can cut through a ft to 2 feet of ice.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
