I have a question for some guys on here...

Would you guys rather go to Bayport on the Croix or go to WBL or a lake in chisago(name the lake for chisago)..

My dad wants to get me on some fish and he has no idea where to go. we want to get om some nice pannies or walleyes.

Are you looking for action or for quality? Quality, go to the Croix, but there are chances you may not catch anything. If you want action to up to the Chisago area. Stop at Frankies bait and ask where the fish are biting. You will hit action and some nice keepers are mixed in there as well. I like north and south center and chisago. Also, don't rule out Lindstrom.

Takes time, there's no magic to fishing. Just need to work at it and learn the place you are fishing. I would recommend getting good at one place. Find out where you wanna fish and what you wanna catch and hit that til you figure it out. Nothing beats time on the water. I hit the outskirts of shanty town on the river last week and marked fish. Had some tell me they hadn't caught any at all out there and we got a dozen. Just time and experience on the river.

Well said Sandmannd. I can't stress enough how important "putting your time in" on the water is to catching fish. There have been very few times where I've approached a lake completely new to me and actually produced. The comment about getting to know one lake is a real good bit of advice as well. This summer, I was able to really dial in on my neighborhood honey hole and it made a huge difference in my general confidence. I was able to gain some confidence in new tactics/methods and then apply them to new bodies of water. Just adding more arsenal to your bag of tricks along with the confidence will help you land more fish, more often. Good luck and stick with it.

Good advice on those last 2 posts!

I understand ice fishing is pretty new to you Jordyn so having success will take time. You made a post in the Metro Forum about your results on WBL. Rather than throwing another dart at the map and randomly picking a lake that others are reporting success on, why not hit WBL again and try to improve on your results.

Couple trips on the ice is not enough time for a beginner to fully understand how a flasher works, how fish respond to jigging, or even what types of lures, bait and presentation should be used for your intended targeted species. This stuff takes years and even then we still learn new tricks every time out.

If you want instant success, hire a guide to take you out for the day. At least then, you'll know what specifically works to catch fish in that spot or spots. Then you can apply that info to your next trip on your own.

I've spent a number of years trying to learn how to ice fish Lake of the Woods and Upper Red Lake better. Its taken a long time.

With LOW, we started out fishing Zippel Bay area, then moving to the reefs on Babblers Rd, fished out of Warroad a little, and then out to Adrians Rd and Pine Island. For the most part, we'd spend that year fishing each of those particular areas. After awhile, you start to learn how the bite shifts around a little bit so now when I go up there, I can rely on my past experiences to help establish where I want to start my search.

Same with Upper Red, I spent most of my time fishing the south shore out of Rogers & Morts with great success. As the crappie population started to diminish, it took awhile to figure out where they were relocating to so I started fishing out of Hillmans Rd for the most part. Success again. Now with the crappies being very difficult to pattern predictably, I've got some spots in my GPS that I hit every single time up there that I have confidence in. While that spot might not be good, I have confidence in the area around that spot to keep searching.

Fishing is a big puzzle and you have to start putting the pieces together one at a time. You can't learn it all at once nor should you attempt to. Don't get overwhelmed. Don't bite off more than you can chew. Start simple and basic, learn something, and then apply that to your next trip. After awhile, you will know where the fish will be on a lake and how the bite "should" be before you even wet a line.

Hanson well said.

Jordyn These guys are right, there is more to ice fishing then cutting a couple of holes and dropping your line down that hole.

I quit ice fishing for a few years, mostly lack of time but other issues too. No lack of experience on my part, but I have not done as well in the last 4 or 5 years since I have started ice fishing again.

It takes time, it is much more difficult to be mobile ice fishing but it can be done.

There is a learning curve to anything new that we try, to get good at that new thing takes some time and patience and work to learn to be good at it.

I have been fishing most of my life and still have so much to learn it is incredable.

Once you do learn how to find the fish consistantly you will be a better fisherman,

Jordyn, I'm going to be on the Croix between 9 and 2 for some late morning crappies. If you and your Dad wanna come out I'd be happy to show you a couple of things I've learned to help you up your curve. Pictures of my house are posted on here. It's a huge canvas house with a yellow wheeler. If you want to email me at shane at [YouNeedAuthorization] dot com and are for sure gonna go out.

Agree with all above posts. One big tip - if the spot you are on is not getting action ... punch more holes and hole hop until you find some active fish. spend a few minutes at each hole jigging and watchin on your flasher.

Week ago we sat on one spot with no action ... hole hopped and found an active hole just 20ft away. We were pulling them in as fast as we could get the lure down the hole.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
