Monster Minnesota State Record flathead catfish caught out of the Rum River north of Milaca,MN.

Butch Richter, Daily Sun Times

6.2.2008 13:55pm

The Minnesota state record flathead has been shattered. The MN DNR has concluded it swam down the Rum River in central Minnesota from Mille Lacs lake, where it was trapped by low water levels after the spring thaw run off had subsided. A local Isanti angler was the lucky fisherman who caught the enormous fish. The angler was quoted saying “Best fight of my life”. After 3 hours of fighting the beast, the local angler was able to net the monster. The official word is still out, but the Nation Fresh Water Fishing World Record Society is looking into a possible world record title being broke.

The beast tipped the scales at over a 100lb’s and 60 plus inches long. The Fisheries Manger at the Minnesota DNR headquarters in St. Paul MN had further commented “That is truly a once in a life time fish. We have not released the exact measurements and weight yet, pending a full investigation in this world class fish. We will be releasing further info on the main/home page on the official MNDNR.gov site very soon. Our fish biologists here in the Fisheries Department are very excited and interested in the final findings.”

Sorry for the cheap shot Darrin....I'm the one with the biggest ego on here and I'll try to work on that. It was basically Ed, Fishhead, and myself who got this catfishing forum off the ground early on. Its just nice to see Mr. Backwater back on the channel..even though he didn't have all his ducks in a row grin Be nice to see the Fishhead back too!

As for Hanson owning the new state record Mudeye at 100+ lbs? Well I give up...I think I'll go trout fishing this spring wink

Thousand-Pound Sturgeon Caught

The Improving fishery status of this “prehistoric fish” is a good sign for Florida sturgeon

Sturgeon were plentiful in West Florida until they were hammered by gill nets into near oblivion in the 1930s, but we don’t remember hearing of a behemouth like this one which was caught recently at the mouth of Rainy River in Minnesota.

Four anglers took turns for six hours reeling in the 11-footer that weighed more than 1000 pounds.

A limited non-commercial take is allowed and stocks are making a slow comeback according to fishery managers. Florida is also nurturing a program to bring back the unusual fish famed more for its caviar though the meat is excellent too.

Was this legitimate because I don't remember Sturgeon getting this big in Minnesota. Also isn't the state record around 100 lbs.? If so then why isn't this thing the record.

how old do you think that fish is? looks like a prehistoric dinosaur kinda

That is a white sturgeon from British Columbia caught a couple of years ago. Lake Sturgeon don't get that big but can live to be 100 years old. Current record is something like 98 lbs but larger fish have been released in the past two years on Lake of the Woods.
