gas line for a garage heater

Ok, so my dad installed a natural gas heater in his garage. he hooked it up inside the house after the gas meter, but before the regulator going to the furnance. There is a reg. before the gas meter outside. How he hooked it into the sediment trap prior to the reg. for the furnance. now the PROBLEM we hooked up the heater and the pilot light lit but after about 20 seconds it goes out. the flame is blue, and hitting the thermocoupler. It is like it runs out of gas! wait 10 minutes and it will light again then die again. there is a reg. on the heater itself ( its a nonvented blue flame). We have checked all the lines and have blown air through, with no obstructions. Thanks for any help in advance. Hope your holidays went well

I'm not a heating guy, but I'm almost positive on this. You need to have a regulator in the gas line before the heater, after the one before the meter. The preesure has to be stepped down after the meter. If you look at all his other hookups inside, I'm sure all of them are tied to the gas line after the regulator inside. Hope this helps and hope I'm right. If not, someone please correct.

You definitely need a regulator right before the furnace. The gas needs to be brought down to seven inches water column.

Look in the owners manual and it should tell what exactly is required entering the furnace.

You did say that you 'bled' the line and had no air in the line to the furnace, just all raw gas?

If I read the post correctly, your gas line will be ok. ??? (size)

The regulator at the gas meter should take care of the hole house. (line psi. only)

How long is the gas line from the house to garage? and what size is the the gas line?

Bleeding out the the line is a must.

You should check the pressure at the (in) pressure tap at the gas valve, with a MANOMETER. 3.5 of water column (nat. gas)

If you do not have the tool and meters to set up a burner/gas valve call a professional. Otherwise it.s just a bomb waiting to go off.

Yes there is a troubleshooting section, it mentions the water column which no, I don't have that tester. It's a constant pilot light with no elec. needed.

Yes, the gas line is what was called for. The water heaters and furnace is maybe 30' long and they work fine. The line to the heater in the garage is 8' long. Now I'm thinking of hooking up after the regulator.

OK, thanks everyone. I've moved the connection to the other side of the regulator and I now have a heater in my garage. Guess Menards doesn't know what they're talking about. Thanks again
