My 3 YO son and I broke in the new permanent fish house yesterday during our first day in it. Got a late start and had our first (and only) visitor of the day at about noon.

I had spend the previous hour instructing him how to run the decoy. No that's too fast, no that's too jerky, no that's too high, no that's too low. Ok, thats just right. The fish came in 30 seconds later!

He got to see it all happen while operating the decoy, and the fact that the fish came in just as he was getting it right hopefully will reinforce that patience and process will lead to a successful day on the ice.

merkman do you have any problem with fish being skittish when shoveling away the snow from the house?

Yes they were very skittish today.

Even the perch were freaking out.

I am going to shovel some more snow over it tomorrow if it froze enough.

It was froze enough today to walk on but there was still water between the froze over part and the top of the ice.

Right now it is a catch 22.

You have to get the snow off so the ice will refreeze but then the fish freak out.

Ahh, the joys of spearing.

We keep seeing bull sunfish one by one marching by, a few perch today, and a spaz 6" bass that went nuts in the hole then got caught up in the weeds, but no northerns today.

I am hoping tomorrow is the day they will be moving.

Got a little dusting of snow today and that helped the skitishness out some.

All species of fish were moving today.

A bullhead even came up and peeke in the hole.

He was cruzin right under the ice then came up and it almost looked like he took a gulp of air then swam off.

I told my brother if he would have had the ice scoop we could have had a free decoy!!!

My brother did stick a very nice 26.5"er today.

Maybe just a tish big for an eater but a real nice fish.

He guessed it to be about a 21 incher in the hole (it looked small from the top) after we got it out and measured it, it was 26.5"

Got it all filleted up and still deciding how to prepare it.

I am thinking I want to try boiled with white sauce but I have never tried that before.
