Crappie yes, walleye no. Was out last night in 10 fow on 3 inches of ice. Once it was dark the walleyes only bit when i turned my lantern as low as it could run without shutting of, with it cranked up the house was warm but the fish stayed on bottom. When targeting crappies 2 or 3 lanterns and a circle of holes drilled around them can work great they almost swim up the hole for the bait.

I suspect that there is a reason it is illegal in MN to use lights to attract fish. There is a waver for luminescent lures and such but I believe it is illegal for example to shine a light down the hole to intentionally attract fish.

I have used the lantern in the ice trick for lighting the area. It works real nice for lighting bobbers and such without getting the light in your eyes. It also works nice for lighting the inside of a shelter without getting the light in your eyes. Place the lantern outside partially in the ice to light up the ice and your whole shelter gets illuminated.

I've wondered though if this would be a situation where the light could be construed as intentionally attracting fish. I've never actually looked into it though. Might be a good question for the DNR officials.

I have tried both on and off. It seems to be hit or miss and never been able to prove if it was because of fishing either way. What I do know is its harder fishing with no lights. Digging for shiners or trying to find your line thats tangled someplace with no lights can get frustrating.
