Veni Chili - Need some help

I've read through some of these recipes and 1 question. What does adding beer do for the chili? Don't get me wrong.. I'm a huge fan of beer, but just don't understand why in chili.

Beer is an awesome braising liquid for meat as well as a flavor contributor. Brown ales are the best in chili for me. Newcastle and samuel smith nut brown ale mmmmmmm.

Chorizo sausage also is a great addition to any chili along with a can of your favorite baked beans.

We have our chili cookoff at work next month. Can't wait. Just made some last week for my parents. Man it's good!!
