Augusta
I just had some 8-10 ft Black Hills Spruce trees planted in my yard. I am planning on watering daily (15 gal.) for the first week, then every other day thereafter. Can anyone tell me if I'm on the right track here? Should I be doing something different? How do you guys water your newly planted trees that are that size? Thanks.
solbes
Sounds like some nice trees. I've got some container grown BHS's that are about 4 feet high now and they are looking real good. I don't really have a good answer for you, since I've never planted any evergreens that size before. It does sound like a lot of watering though. But I'll leave it to the experts here. When I've done bare root evergreens or potted evergreens, I water very deeply once a week for a month, and then again very deeply every other week throughout the first season. bottomdweller
I planted a variety of spruces, probably around fifty trees, bhs, balsam, blue spruce, siberian. All in the six to eight foot size and watered once a week about eight gallons per tree. During very hot periods twice a week. Just before freeze up I gave them a good dosing. Lost one tree in clay soil.Good luck
LABS4ME
With as cool as it is and as wet as the soil is... 15 gallons would be way too much.Water fairly hard after planting to settle the soil, and then 1"-2" of water per week there after (incl. rain amounts) to keep moisture available...New plants (especially evergreens) are prine to root rotting with too much water.Good Luck!Ken

ottertailguy
I've heard over watering of transplanted trees is the main reason that they will die. Just use common sense and they will be fine.
