Ken, compare size and dimensions. Accipiters like the sharp-shinned are slim birds compared with the stocky buteos like the broad-winged.

Accipiters also have narrower, longer tails compared with their somewhat short, blunt wings.

It would be very easy to tell the two apart if they were side-by-side on a branch, but of course that never happens in nature.
