Are wide spools best?

I know gear ratio and big lures have gotten beat to death on this board but I have one more question. Do you all use the 6000 size reels (or if you're not an ABU-fite I'm wondering about the widest reel in whatever brand you use)?

I'm guessing that regardless of gear ratio the wider the spool, the more line you pick up with each crank because with the line packed on the outside of the spool stays "bigger" longer. Is that a wrong assumption?

I'm actually buying my first 7000 for the big stuff and I already have a handful of C3's so I thought I'd add a C4 for surface lures. I just wanted to make sure that the 6600 is the right size. Also, is the speed diference between the C4 and C3 enough to make it worth getting?

I went to Thorn Bros.to look at reels for throwing cowgirls was talking to the sales guy and he recommended the shimano tekota 300.I was thinking the same as you.Looking at a tekota 600 larger spool and all.But he said his friends which are guides on the big pond use the 300s and love them.Booth reels have 4.2.1 gear's 300 feels good on the rod and it is smaller but the spool is smaller which is a concern to me.He said the spool size on the 300 will hold over 100.yds.of 80 lb bronzback.Anyway he talked me in to the 300.Going up to the lake this weekend to test it out.I might look silly casting a cowgirl out on the ice? If i don't like the way it preforms he will be exchanging this one for another come Monday!

The Tekota you can get with or without the Linecounter attached to it. I've got some cattin' friends that use Tekotas and they can cast a mile! Very nice reels!

In regards to a wide spool... if you are after line capacity and a consistent gear ratio, thats what I would choose. If you think about 2 similar reels, one has a wide spool and one has a narrow spool; the reel with the narrower spool will pack more line onto the spool quicker increasing the ratio (harder to crank or picks up line faster, depends on how you look at it) as more line is reeled on.

If line capacity IS an issue, you'll want to look wider for sure (more capacity). If line capacity doesn't matter (which I bet it doesn't), I'd pay more attention to the gear ratio that'll pull your baits the best at the speed you want.

Guess its a tool for the job type of thing.

In talking spool size, you just can't compare anything to the 7000's IMO. They hold an insane amount of line, I think I have a 100yds of mono backing and 150 yds of Bronzeback on mine. Whiel the gear ratio won't allow you to pick up huge amounts of line, the size of the spool compensates for the very well.
