Who uses their trolling motor sonar?

I bought a Minn Kota PD 65 last year with AP/CP/US and I have never used its sonar capabilities because I dont have an extra finder lying around. I MAY upgrade my console finder to GPS which would mean I would have an extra finder for the trolling motor sonar on the BOW.

Those of you with trolling motor sonar capability, do you use it? If so, in what situations and how often?

I like to use it for following contours on lakes. If you wait until your transducer in the back picks it up you're already at least 17' off the contour line - having it on the trolling motor makes it quite a bit easier in my opinion.

I use it all the time. We have a Lowrance depth finder on the bow and a Lowrance color GPS\Depth finder on the consule. If I want to use the GPS in conjunction with trolling I'll sit at the steering wheel and watch that depth finder\GPS and steer with the remote control (we also have the same trolling motor with the wireless handheld remote) but 9 times out of 10 I sit on the bow and just watch the depth finder up there that uses the transducer on the trolling motor. Maybee this year I'll mount the extra depth finder (Eagle) to the back of the boat so the boys back there know whats going on.

I use about half of the time. Like Marine_man said it is great for following contours. If the contours are steep it is much easier to stay on your target depth than waiting for the back end of the boat to get there. If I'm working flats or other areas that I know very well I it's a toss-up as to which one I will use because my console unit is better at picking up fish and has GPS.

i love it. I use it all the time on my boat. I use it when im fishing deep water, where i can follow everything off the graph. It helps me control the boat alot better and stay on point that i wouldnt be able to do without it.

You will like it when you get it up there and use it.

I use it all the time as well. The older US werent the best but the new ones are much better. I wont have a trolling motor without the AP and the CP is very convenient to have. I use mine all the time for tyrolling bottom bouncers and slip drifting.

If I'm fishing I am in the front of the boat using mine. About the only time I am looking at the sonar on the dash is when I am getting from one fishing spot to another. Combine the front sonar with a good GPS unit and that makes contours a breeze.
