I would start with the MN Attorney General's office.

Write them a letter, give them a call or go on-line.

I know someone who was let go for being pregnant and the Attorney General's office worked to correct the issue.

It's free and they do work for you.

Good luck.

I have used the Attorney General to assist in a denied insurance claim. I had a check and an apology within a week.

Something else you/they may want to consider for the future is prepaid legal services if possible. I have been a user for several years with no complaints.

Another option is to contact the local bar association and see if they have an attorney referral service. If you use them you get a free consultation with a lawyer for 30 or 60 minutes and they can help sort things out. Frankly it's not going to be the firm on the top floors of some office tower but they should be able to help out.

Ramsey County (651) 224-1775

Hennepin 612 752-6666

Google the other areas of the state if needed.

1-800-lawyers. On a side note, why would a person do work without a contract? I figure if they won't sign one, there must be a reason. Anyhow, for future reference for all that read this, a contract will protect both parties.

A contract employee does not have any Employee Rights. Lots of people, including me, do work all the time without a contract. In my business or home when I have a big job for lets say an electrician, I get a bid and sign a contract. The company has a legal document to stand on if I don't pay. If I have a small job, I call the same electrician and they do the job without a bid If I don't pay they have the same legal right to collect. Your friend has the same rights provided they can prove they did the work.

Sub contractors are the same as if a home owner or business didn't pay for services rendered. The only recourse is small claims court. You can do that by your self, simply go to court house and pay $60 fill out form and get court date. Judge will hear the case (if the other party doesn't show, you get default judgement). After 30 days judgement will be executed and then you pay another fee ($40) to file lean on their property. THen that goes against their credit rating etc. Most that I have threatend with this pay up, as they dont want it on their record. I only had to go thru with 3 cases in my business, all 3 are still unpaid, but i have the lean on their property so when they sell, i'm the first one that gets paid.

Not sure if this is the only recourse, but it is the one that my attorney suggested. I did it myself, because at $100 bucks an hour, it doesn't take long to have them charge more than your owed. (side note: same attorney charged me $250 to do 15 minutes worth of research online and send an email...last time i went there.)

Take mule shaks advice, it is a very rough topic and can be hard to get money. I assume there are no pre lein notices? There are laws to protect subcontractors from things like this but really not many people to it the correct legal way to cover themselves so they could or can place a lein property. Bum deal, I hope she gets paid, all the crooks out there should be taken behind the barn and shot
