Service/Repair manuals

Question

Are they all the same or should I check out a specific brand? I am looking for 98 Silverado for replacing fluids and fairly easy parts. Thanks!

Additional question: I have a one year old receiver hitch that is rusting already after only towing a boat once, do those plastic caps help fight rust or is there any other good way?

If you're not looking for anything overly complicated, the Haynes or Chiltons manuals generally will do the job. If you want a complete service manual, the GM ones are good (the name of them escapes me right now) but pricey. I ended up getting the complete 98-05 GM manuals for all vehicles on DVD for a good deal. As for the receiver hitch, I used the plastic cap for a couple of years and it started to rust anyway. I think it actually helps the salt/sand etc. to sit in there during the winter. I stopped using it a couple of years ago and it hasn't gotten any worse. Good luck!

Most public libraries have free access to alldata which is one of the online automotive resources that many independant shops use.

Otherwise the haynes and chiltons will give you a good general idea of how to get r done!
