MamaVic
Hi all - OK, going up to Andrusia with the parents June 3-10. I'm hearing about the mayflies, and depending on the time of the hatch, I'm wondering about their affect on fishing. We don't have mayflies - or at least, they're not a big deal - around Omaha. Is it truly detrimental to the fishing, or just irritating to the fishermen? Thanks -Vicky
reelemin
Welcome MamaVic - the May flies should be done with by then. Its more of a neusance for the angler, usually.
Lisa Almquist
There's a hatch on the area lakes around the cabin (Deer River) middle of June usually. Tami's right-they are sort of a pain when they're all over your line or in your boat (look where you sit!). I don't think they affect fishing as much as some people say they do though. I've not seen a significant decline in catching fish during the hatch.

Cicada
Weather can play a big part in the hatch. Around here a couple of years ago it dragged on for two or three weeks. I used to fish Lida and it has a real bad hatch. I had a terrible time catching walleyes while the hatch was going on. I do know of a couple of guys that couldn't wait for the hatch because they knew where the best mud flats were and how to target the walleyes wihile they were feeding on the hatch. Lisa Almquist
During a mayfly hatch, just keep moving until you find active fish.
UdeLakeTom
Just don't run into a swarm of them with your vehicle. They can really make a mess on the windshield.
Lisa Almquist
And while I'm taking a walk around the lake and it's a bad hatch year, they tend to swarm a gal too.
Iambjm
Just think how much fun it would be to buzz around on a 4 wheeler during the hatch...............splat
shamrock7
And remember when the wind blows into your shore at night and the pleasant smell as they decompose.
