LX-5 For Catt'in

Shack

Recommended Posts

This week, I am gearing up for Catt'in cool.gif.

I am getting out and putting together 2 new rod and reel combo's and buying a couple other items for this season.

Also the boat is coming in the garage from storage and getting a couple new add ons, plus maintenance

The one thing I have thought about is installing my LX-5 on the boat. Basically I have an option of a puck (trolling motor transducer) or a rear transom high speed ducer. I have a bow mount Minnkota and would love to sneak into area's, with a head's up to what's in front of me. Now, the rear ducer is a high speed reading type, which would be nice also, but my humming bird reads well at higher speeds. I am thinking the puck ducer is what I am going with.

Anyone else use LX-5 for cats?

I really like the unit and would love to use it during open water. I think it would an effective tool, plus I just do not want to put it away for the summer.

What does this pic tell you?

In all honesty, this was kinda a trial run with the LX-5 in the boat for cats. It was nice because it kinda gave me something to look at, but also took away from some of the channel clicker runs.

PS. Those fish suspend in the summer too and will chase your bait up and smack it..Bingo.

Just my opinion.

I think that flashers (specifically the LX5) are great and have a place anywhere/anytime when it comes to fishing.

However in open water, it is really nice to have a short history of the bottom contour.

I’m getting to the point that I can’t even remember what I ate for lunch.

So yes, the flasher works super for reading real time depth and underwater structure. But that is all for nothing if you can remember how that snag or hump looked, or what depth it topped out at, or how deep was that hole at the deepest point.

With an LCD, I have quite a bit of time to decipher what is going on under there.

I used a flasher late last fall though for vertical jigging and it was a blast!

It tells me that your a little goofy! Short rod in the boat... LOL

Agreed. I think anybody who posts in this forum has a degree of goofyness to them. We might be goofy from all the lack of sleep. I positive I'm goofy after an all night flattie outing... And if some goofy juice is involved...Whofta.

Goofy is as goofy does grin.gif. I am some what goofy, my wife will back me up on that. Thanks Tyler.

Hey dtro,

Is that the factory (standard) cord? If so, I might just do something like that. I have never pulled it out all the way yet.

P.S.,

The graph will always be in the boat ;\) , the flasher is just an added bonus.

Put the LX-5 up front on the bow, trolling motor mounted puck transducer. I think thats where it'll get the most use IMO anyway.

I tried running my Marcum LX-3 and Lowrance LMS-332c side by side on the dash and they interfere with each other bad when the transducers are mounted next to each other on the back. Actually, you can use the IR on the Marcum to tune out the interference but I couldn't figure out a way (yet!) to get the Lowrance to kill the Marcum interference. I'm sure there is a way to do it, I just haven't monkeyed around enough yet to figure it out.

Thanks Hanson,

I had that thought about that in the back of mind. I figure my Humming Bird would not work well with a MarCum ducer next to it.

I feel with everyone’s thoughts in mind, this could be a very effective trick. With the graph ducer on the rear and the flasher ducer in front, you could get graph structure, with real time fish info.

This would also curb the “hard” motoring threw a catty area ;\) . I would have to drop the trolling motor.

I think all you would have needed was a sping bobber for the long rod grin.gif

Darren, That brings back memories.

That worked pretty slick but a shorter rod would have saved the back a little better. Couldn't quite get the ducer out there far enough to make the rod holding comfortable with a 6 foot rod.

I caught a couple though and that's all that matters.

Goofy is as Goofy does.

Well, I did it. The LX5 is ready to go for catt'in.

I took Hanson's advice and went with the bow mount/trolling motor. I think it should work well.

I had to drill a little hole to make sure cord would not go into prop.

I am pumped. If my MarCum does what it did for me last winter, it should work out great.

The one thing is, the summer set up is a 20 deg. cone only. On the river, it should not make a bit of differnce.

Thanks for the input. God I love this forum.
