GPS Software and a computer on VISTA

Tom7227

Question

The computer died and I ended up with VISTA. Now it seems like none of my software works any more. GPS is really torquing me out - does anyone know if the Lowrance Mapcreate 7 works with VISTA. A friend came over with a year old Bushnell GPS and we couldn't get anything to work at all.

Thoughts - or do I need a pail of water for all my 'old' toys?

I have Vista and for older software, I have to find file and use the “open with” option and open file with correct format/program. It might take an on line update to get the correct software to open file from old version. If you check around on-line, you will find your answer, or some computer I.T. guy will chime in on here. It can be done, just take some trial and error.

I transfer files from my lap top (Vista) to my desk top (Windows) at work (back and forth) with no concerns (after finding the correct way), but these are spread sheets, reports and other text files. You also might want to contact the manufacture of the devices, to see if they have software for the device, that is compatible with Vista.

Good luck..

It's not uncommon that when new operating systems are first introduced, old software can have issues. It's up to the software manufacturers to provide upgrade to remain compatable with the new operating systems. In my case, I usually can get around it rather easily.

I suspect you are using User accounts on your VISTA system as I do and this can sometimes create issues but so far I have been able to get around them. When I first installed VISTA I had some problems with my older Mapsource software from Garmin. I also recently installed a Palm software that isn't VISTA compatable and I solved the problem using the same method.

I'm going from memory here so bear with me. When I get home tonight I'll check if my memory was good or not and post an update if necessary.

Right-click on your desktop Icon and select properties. Click on the Compatability tab. Try selecting the option - Run in compatability mode for: and select the operating system you know it worked on.

Another option you can try. I believe on the compatability screen you will also find an option to run as administrator. Try checking this option. When you try to open the software you'll be prompted for administrative password. This is a small hassle but it might work. This is the option I used on mine.

Try these options alone or in combination.

Once the software manufacturer comes out with their VISTA compatable upgrade you should be able to get back to normal.

The only thing I am waiting for is the patch from lakemaster. Otherwise everything else I use has had the software patches for vista. I emailed Lowrance about mapcreate and vista compatibility this was the reply

"It may or may not work, we have not tried running it with windows vista as of yet."

I just spoke with one of my fishing partners. He had this happen to him when he upgraded his computer. He called lowrance and they said Vista does seem to block his map 7 programing and talking to his GPS unit (H2OC). It soulds like it had to do with the USB/Serial port comunication and Vista. He is trying to work thru it but I don't know the fix yet. Ill post if he finds a way around it.

    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
